Police are to install closed circuit cameras to monitor the safety of prostitutes in Edinburgh's new red light tolerance zone.
The cameras will be put up in Salamander Street, Leith, as soon as possible, after the city's prostitutes officially moved there earlier this week.
Vice girls had previously worked in a part of Edinburgh known as the Coburg Street Triangle.
Lothian and Borders Police believes the new location is a safer place for them to ply their trade.
A police spokesman says the force is seeking funding from Edinburgh City Council and other organisations so that permanent CCTV cameras can be installed.
He added: "The previous tolerance zone was difficult to monitor with CCTV cameras because it covered three separate streets.
"This area is far easier to monitor because it is a straight stretch. The cameras will be for the safety of the community, not just the prostitutes."
Local residents in the Salamander Street area have protested against the decision to move the prostitutes to the area, which they say was taken without consultation.
But local councillor Phil Attridge says he hopes the CCTV cameras will help to allay their fears.
He said: "I think it is an excellent idea which will help to ensure the safety of the working girls and also ensure they stay within the tolerance zone. It might also go a long way to helping alleviate some of the fears and concerns of the residents."
