Subject: Propaganda: White House Pays for More MTV Programming
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed"

[Note from Matthew Gaylor: Just as the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program was been found to be ineffective to slightly raising drug use, I'd like to see an independent study on the effects of US government propaganda on teen drug usage. Just off the cuff, it doesn't seem like a very bright idea to pay for shows with titles like "Drugs are fun". Also we should be concerned when language such as "reality show" is used to describe programming that has an unseen hand on the production, in this case The White House's Office of National Drug Control Policy.]

MEDIA CAMPAIGN FLASH - August 20, 2001

MTV"S "FLIPPED" TO FOCUS ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF DRUG USE

** "Drugs Are Fun" Provides Opportunity for Dialogue on Drug Use **

MTV's "Flipped" (www.mtv.com/onair/flipped) is a cross between "Fantasy Island" and "Scared Straight" - a new type of reality show where real people become unsuspecting actors in what could be their own worst nightmare. Young people surrender their lives for 24 hours and face the consequences of their actions or experience the other side of a situation in mock, but very realistic, scenarios.

This week, watch for a powerful episode on substance abuse, "Drugs Are Fun," which actually shows that drugs are anything but fun by focusing on the consequences associated with drug use.

Parents and youth organizations are encouraged to record the show, view it with their children or youth members and discuss it.

The program premieres on MTV on Monday, August 20, 2001 at 10:30 p.m. EDT.

"Flipped: Drugs Are Fun" will repeat on the following dates: **Tuesday, August 21 at 5:00 p.m.; **Wednesday, August 22 at 7:30 p.m.; **Saturday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m.; **Monday, August 27 at 1:00 p.m.; and **Thursday, August 30 at 10:30 p.m.

All times are EDT - check local listings for broadcast times and MTV channels in your area.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN: The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign targets youth ages 9-18 - especially middle-school adolescents - parents, and other adults who influence choices young people make to lead drug-free lives.

To get the word out across every economic and cultural boundary, the Campaign uses a mix of modern communications techniques to educate and empower young people to reject illicit drugs. The Campaign also teams up with civic and non-profit organizations, faith-based groups and private corporations to enlist and engage people in prevention efforts at school, at work and at play.
