This will be a truly special event, marking the 15th anniversary of the first seminars which led to the establishment of the index.

The 2001 annual conference for the Economic Freedom Network is being held in San Francisco, California, U.S.A. This is your chance to meet and mingle with like-minded researchers and policy analysts from around the world!

We are proud to announce that Milton and Rose Friedman will attend this meeting to mark the 15th anniversary of the first symposia, hosted by Milton Friedman and Michael Walker, which initiated the Economic Freedom index.

The conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza San Francisco Hotel situated in the heart of Union Square. The one and one-half day program will take place in the Savoy and Russian Hill rooms on the 30th floor with magnificent views of San Francisco Bay, Twin Peaks and Coit Tower atop Telegraph Hill. The Monday evening dinner, hosted by the Cato Institute, will be held at Le Bistrot restaurant on Telegraph Hill where the reception will be hosted by the locally-based Pacific Research Institute.

We will focus on three subject areas: Jim Gwartney and Bob Lawson will discuss a significant expansion of the number of variables in the index to create an even more comprehensive report; the Fraser Institute will present its ongoing research on a North American Economic Freedom Index; and we will look at a subject of increasing interest to a number of institutes, global taxation. While we hope for a good representation of papers on international taxation, we welcome papers on other subjects as well.

The conference begins at 8 pm on Sunday, October 28, 2001 with a reception at the Crowne Plaza conference hotel. Official business will end at noon on Tuesday, October 30, 2001. Tuesday afternoon will be left open for optional sightseeing.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Conference Registration Conference registrations will be handled by Chris Schlegel of The Fraser Institute – chriss@fraserinstitute.ca Fax 604-688-8539. Please use the attached conference registration form.

Conference Registration Fee US$125 until September 24th, US$150 until October 22nd the registration deadline. The registration fee covers Sunday reception/cash bar, two continental breakfasts, hot and cold beverages during meeting breaks, Monday lunch, the PRI-hosted reception and Cato-hosted dinner at Le Bistrot, and conference materials. Full refunds will be given for written cancellations received one week prior to October 22, 2001. Delegate substitution is permitted. Confirmation will be sent upon receipt of payment. Use attached the conference registration form to register for the conference.

Conference Hotel The conference hotel is the Crowne Plaza San Francisco, 480 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94108 U.S.A. Phone: 415-398-8900. Reservation Fax: 415-398-3210. The hotel is situated at Union Square which is world famous for shopping, galleries, and theatres. The cable car stops at hotel entrance, it is within easy walking distance to theatre district, financial district, and minutes from Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 30 and Marina Beach.

Accommodation A block of rooms has been booked at the Crowne Plaza San Francisco under “Economic Freedom Fraser Institute”. The conference group rate is US$159 per night single/double occupancy for the nights of October 28th and 29th. This rate is subject to taxes of 14% plus a $3 energy surcharge. A limited number of guest rooms are included in the block for 2 days preceding and following the conference dates. The room block is guaranteed until September 28th; after this cut-off date accommodation reservations will be accepted by the hotel on a space and rate available basis – please note that the group rate of $159 per night is not guaranteed after the cut-off date.

Hotel reservations must be made directly with the Crowne Plaza San Francisco. Call the hotel reservations department at 1-888-218-0808 or fax to reservations 415-398-3210 or email to rgriffin@bristolhotels.com. Be sure to reference the event as “Economic Freedom Fraser Institute” when registering. Guaranteed reservations must be cancelled before 6:00 pm on the day prior to arrival date. Be sure to obtain a confirmation number. A credit card will be required when registering at the hotel. Although the Crowne Plaza San Francisco cannot accept group bookings online, you may access information about the hotel via www.crowneplaza.com.

San Francisco International Airport The San Francisco International airport is 15 miles from the conference hotel – The Crowne Plaza San Francisco. The taxi fee is $45 or you may prefer to use Lorrie’s Airport shuttle.

Visitor Visa Generally, citizens of a foreign country who wish to enter the United States must first obtain a visa. For information about obtaining a visa go to http://travel.state.gov/visa;visitors.html.
