Network: NBC
Announcers: Curt Gowdy, Harry Caray
Format: DVD (3 disks)

Notes: This is from Black-and-White kinescopes of CBC broadcast... The quality is about as good as you can get given the technology limitations, the most notable issue being the b&w effect involving shadows and plays that go into shaded areas of the field.

Game Notes

Bob Gibson dominates as the Cardinals open with a 4-0 win over the Tigers.

Gibson strikes out 17 Detroit batters, breaking the previous World Series record of 15 strikeouts set by Sandy Koufax. Gibson dominates to the end. After Mickey Stanley singles to lead off the 9th, Gibson then strikes out the next 3, Al Kaline, Norm Cash and Willie Horton. Gibson finishes allowing 5 hits.

Meanwhile, St. Louis gets to 31-game winner Denny McLain in the bottom of the 4th for 3 runs, making him pay for early walks. After Roger Maris and Tim McCarver both walk, Mike Shannon's 1-out single scores Maris. An error puts the runners at 2nd and 3rd where they score on Julian Javier's single. Lou Brock pads the lead with a solo HR off Pat Dobson in the 7th.
