Game Notes

Ryan Howard upstages everyone in the Phillies' 12-4 win over the Padres.

Howard hits a pair of towering homers and drives in 5 on a night when San Diego honors Tony Gwynn on his impending Hall of Fame induction, and Jamie Moyer and David Wells face up in the oldest matchup of left-handed starters in MLB history, and the 2nd oldest between any starters.

Moyer and Wells take the mound at a combined age of 88 years and 307 days, surpassing the previous record for left-handers set earlier in matchups between Wells and Randy Johnson, and then Johnson and Moyer twice. Only Phil Niekro and Don Sutton were older when they started against each other in 1987 at a combined age of 90 years and 135 days.

Howard launched a 407-foot blast to center, staking Philadelphia to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. He adds a 428-foot solo HR into the 2nd deck in center for a 4-1 lead in the 4th, and then an RBI-single in the 5th. Howard goes 3-for-3 while reaching base 5 times.
