In the 1st trip by Michigan into East Lansing, since a controversial finish and Michigan State win, the Wolverines ride Chris Perry to a commanding lead, before the Spartans rally with 10 points in the 4th quarter, closing to 27-20 on 65-yard fumble return for a TD by Clifford Dukes w/ 6:03 left.

Michigan seals the win when Scott McClintock intercepts Jeff Smoker's desparation heave into the end zone on the final play.

Michigan had built a 27-10 lead on 3 TD passes by John Navarre and 219 yards rushing on 51 carries by Perry.
