Game Notes

Trojans leave #17 Tigers stunned in more ways than one in a 24-14 upset.

Missouri, the 1st major program to visit Troy, enters heavily favored and jumps out to a 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter. However, everything changes. Jason Samples gets Troy State on the board mid-way through the 2nd quarter with a 27-yard TD pass to Jermaine Richardson on an end-around pass. Then buried at the 7 yard line, the Trojans scratch their way out, and turn in ESPN's play of the year.

DeWhitt Betterson's fumble is caught in mid-air by 277-pound guard Junior Louissant, who stuns everyone by rumbling 63 yards for a tying TD. Greg Whibbs' 47-yard FG sends Troy State to the half leading 17-14. Samples catches a 33-yard TD pass from Aaron Leak in the 4th quarter.

Samples touches the ball just twice all game, both result in TDs. Louissant touches it once, resulting in a TD. Meanwhile, Missouri's Brad Smith goes 25-of-46 for 224 yards and 1 TD, but manages just 36 yards on 15 carries as the Troy State defense hounds him, forces him into a fumble and 2 INTs and puts an end to Smith's Heisman hopes.
