Game Notes

Vince Young's heroics and Pete Carroll's dumb blunder combine to make the #2 Longhorns thrilling 41-38 victory over the #1 Trojans, for their first National Championship in 35 years.

After Carroll's decision to go for it on 4th-and-2 at midfield backfires, Young has a short field to cover the winning score, an untouched 8-yard TD run on 4th-and-5 w/ :19 left. Carroll's mistake basically assures Young will score as he only needed to cover 56 yards, instead of 80 or more, with 2:09 remaining.

As Young did all game, he was untouched by USC on the winning score, and much of the game rushing for 200 yards and 3 TDs, in addition to throwing for 267 yards. One of the few times Young was touched, it didn't matter as equipment failure allows Selvin Young's 12-yard TD run to stand despite Vince Young's knee being on the ground before the pitch.

The TD keys a 16-point run by the Longhorns that leaves Texas ahead 16-10 at the half. The run started after Reggie Bush foolishly pitched the ball while being tackled, resulting in a fumble deep in Texas territory.

Bush, the Heisman winner, finishes with 82 yards rushing and 95 yards receiving. Matt Leinart caps his career by hitting 29-of-40 for 365 yards.

USC rides LenDale White and Dwayne Jarrett to claim the lead in the second half. White finishes with 124 yards rushing and 3 TDs. White starts the second half with a 3-yard TD run giving the Trojans a 1-point lead, and then scores again in response to a Texas TD. Bush extends USC's lead to 31-23 with a 26-yard TD run early in the 4th quarter.

Jarrett, who finishes with 10 catches for 121 yards, lifts the Trojans to a 38-26 lead with a 22-yard TD w/ 6:42 remaining in the game.

But then Young and his teammates respond. Young runs it in for a 17-yard TD to cut it to 38-33 w/ 4:03 left.

Texas TE David Thomas finishes with 10 catches for 88 yards.
