Game Notes

#1 Buckeyes beat the #2 Wolverines 42-39 in the "Game of the Century"... or an over-hyped scrimmage if the BCS rematches the two teams.

Ohio State makes the big plays, overcoming some uncharacteristic and costly mistakes by Troy Smith, who throws and INT and loses 2 fumbles in the 2nd half. Smith does throw for 316 yards and 4 TDs to 'clinch' the Heisman Trophy (Perhaps fittingly, the same analysts saying Michigan earned a rematch with a loss, also awarded Smith the Heisman after a game in which he commits 3 turnovers.)

The Buckeyes build a 28-14 lead in the 1st half as Smith throws 3 of his TD passes, including a 39-yarder to Ted Ginn Jr., and Chris Wells bursts by Michigan for a 52-yard TD run.

The Wolverines turn things around early in the 4th quarter as Mike Hart rushes for 60 yards on 4 carries, the last a 2-yard TD run. Then Alan Branch intercepts Smith on the next possession, setting up Garrett Rivas' 39-yard FG cutting Ohio State's lead to 28-24.

Antonio Pittman answers 2 plays later with a 58-yard TD run. However, Smith's 1st fumble sets up a 1-yard TD run by Hart cutting it to 35-31 early in the 4th quarter. Smith makes up for it capping an 83-yard drive with a 13-yard TD pass to Brian Robiskie for a 42-31 lead.

Michigan adds a late TD on Chad Henne's 16-yard TD pass to Tyler Ecker with 2:16 remaining, but Ohio State covers the ensuing onside kick.

Pittman rushes for 159 yards on 18 carries, while Hart answers with 142 yards rushing and Henne throws for 267 yards and 2 TDs.
