UCLA's defense dominates Arizona State, harrassing Rudy Carpenter into a miserable 11-of-30 performance that also features an INT. Trey Brown returns the pick to the 1, setting up Chane Moline's 1-yard TD plunge for a 14-3 lead early in the 2nd quarter.

UCLA's offense is non-descript for much of the night, as well as Patrick Cowan. But Cowan does manage to hook up with Brandon Breazell on a pair of TD passes, from 56 yards in the 1st quarter, and from 35 yards in the 4th quarter to build a 24-12 lead. Breazell's 2 catches account for almost half of Cowan's 184 yards passing.
