Game Notes

#5 Cardinals capitalize and knockout #3 Mountaineers 44-33.

After trading FGs for TDs in the 1st half, Louisville converts mistakes into TDs in the 2nd half and uses a fumble return and punt return for TDs in a 2 1/2 minute span to break open a 16-14 game and build a commanding 30-14 lead.

Louisville dominated the 1st half, but West Virginia's quick strikes from Steve Slaton and Pat White answer to keep it close. Slaton's fumble early in the 3rd quarter leads to Malik Jackson's 13-yard return for a TD, then Trent Guy returns a short punt 40 yards for a score leaving the Mountaineers in an unenviable chase mode.

West Virginia continues moving (totaling 540 yards) and scoring, but Brian Brohm and the Cardinals keep answering. Brohm finishes 19-of-26 for 354 yards and 1 TD with Mario Urrutia catching 6 for 113 yards and Harry Douglas pulling in 6 for 116 yards.

West Virginia counters with Slaton's 156 yards rushing and 74 yards receiving, despite missing part of the 2nd half with an injury, and White, who runs for 125 yards and 4 TDs while passing for 222 yards.
