Rice had built a 31-7 lead, but had to withstand a 22-point 4th quarter by Southern Miss. The key stop coming on the Eagles' 2-point try for the tie with 2:46 remaining after Stephen Reaves hit Shawn Nelson with a 9-yard TD pulling them within 31-29.

The Owls were able to build the lead on the strength of 2 TD passes from Chase Clement to Jarrett Dillard. However, the big lift came from 7 turnovers committed by Southern Miss.
