Game Notes

#2 Sooners shutdown the #4 Wolverines in a 14-6 win to capture the National Championship.

After #1 Ohio State falls in the Rose Bowl, Oklahoma's defense rises to the occassion. The Sooners harrass Michigan QBs Rick Leach and Mike Elzinga into an 0-for-16 start to the game, with the only 2 completions coming on a final desperate rally attempt in the final minute. The Wolverines' lone score comes on Gordon Bell's 2-yard TD run in the 4th quarter after Oklahoma fumbled on its own 2.

Beyond a defensive effort led by Lee Roy and Dewey Selmon, who combined for 23 tackles, the Sooners didn't need much offense. And they didn't get much either. Oklahoma gets the lone score of the 1st half when Billy Brooks scores on a 39-yard reverse. The Sooners don't find the end zone again until QB Steve Davis scores on a 9-yard keeper around the end on the 1st play of the 4th quarter.

Led by Joe Washington's 73 yards, Oklahoma gets 191 yards from the trio of Washington, Davis and fullback Jim Culbreath.
