Game Notes

Taft Toreadors jump on Crenshaw Cougars early, then hang on for a 35-34 win in the season opener.

Cal-bound Darian Hagan Jr. fumbles the opening kickoff, opening the door for Taft to get out to an early 14-0 lead. Sophomore QB Exavier Johnson (Utah State) connects with Malcolm Smith (USC) for a TD. Smith later adds an 11-yard TD run as he finishes with 69 yards rushing and 41 yards receiving.

Andre Harris (Idaho) has the 1st of 2 TD runs to give the Toreadors the 14-0 lead. However, Crenshaw responds as Marquis Curtis connects with John Thompson (San Jose State) on a 33-yard TD pass and Tyquan Knox returns a fumble 44 yards for a TD, cutting the gap to 14-12.

Taft stretches the lead back out to 35-12 by halftime as Harris and Smith both score again, and all-everything WR Jamere Holland (USC) catches a 9-yard bullet from Johnson for a TD. Holland leaves in the 3rd quarter with a leg injury, leaving fellow WR/DB Chris Wellington (Nevada) to grab the spotlight with several big catches and 1 INT.

Crenshaw rallies with 22 points in the 4th quarter. Junior Raymond Carter (UCLA) scores on a 15-yard run, combined with a 2-point play that cuts it to 35-20. Curtis hooks up with Knox on a 30-yard bomb pulling the Cougars to within 35-26.

Crenshaw goes 80 yards in the final 2 minutes with Carter scoring on another TD run with :39 left. Curtis hits Knox for the 2-point play, but Crenshaw cannot recover the onside kick attempt.

Knox steals the spotlight from Taft's heralded WRs, catching 7 passes for 108 yards.

Crenshaw also features Cal-bound fullback R.J. Garrett, San Jose State-bound guard Adonis Davis, junior DT Brian Price (UCLA), junior OT Darrion Weems (Oregon), junior LB Terrell Turner (Oregon), junior CB Kenneth Patten (Idaho), junior CB Elijah-Blu Smith (Colorado State).
