Game Notes

Mission Viejo Diablos defend their top ranking in California by beating #5 De La Salle 36-26.

Mission Viejo overpowers the powerhouse Spartans in the 4th quarter. De La Salle, looking to avenge a loss to the Diablos in 2004, lead 26-22 heading into the 4th quarter. But R.J. Toman (New Hampshire) hits WR Sean Fitzgerald (Utah) with a 42-yard bomb on the first play of the quarter, setting up Keegan Gogerty's 1-yard TD run. Fullback Chane Moline (UCLA) puts the game away with a 1-yard TD w/ 2:58 left in the game.

Moline finishes with 179 yards and 2 TDs.

After both teams trade safeties, Toman hits sophomore Warren Reuland (Stanford) for a 25-yard TD and 9-2 lead w/ :38 left in the 1st quarter. However, De La Salle responds with a 10-yard TD pass from sophomore Mike MacGillvray to Vincent Clovis, set up by Christopher Garrett's (Illinois State) 61-yard KO return. MacGillvray puts the Spartans ahead 16-9 with a 1-yard sneak on 4th down.

Moline ties it up with a 1-yard TD on 4th down w/ :23 left in the 1st half. However, Tim Maupin's 1-yard TD run puts De La Salle ahead again the 3rd quarter. The Diablos cut it to 23-22 after CB Marcus North (UC-Davis) intercepts MacGillvray and returns it 46 yards for a TD.
