Cardinal Newman Cardinals stop Modesto-Central Catholic's 61-game win streak with a 22-14 upset.

Ryan Lingle throws for 294 yards and 2 TDs, the go-ahead one coming with a bit of luck when Bari Mims gathers in a deflected ball behind the secondary and takes it in for a 68-yard TD w/ 5:37 left in the 3rd quarter. Brian Hutton's 1-yard TD extends the lead to 22-14 late in the 3rd quarter. Hutton finishes with 103 yards rushing.

The defense, which plays a key role throughout, then makes the lead stand up. The Cardinals keep Raiders' junior RB/LB Louis Bland (Washington State) from dominating as usual. Bland has 54 yards rushing and 53 yards on 2 catches, along with a 1-yard TD run. But falls far short of his 16-yard per carry average.

Cardinal Newman includes OT Alex Netter (Northwestern) and WR/S Scott Magnuson (Fort Lewis).
