Plano East Panthers hold off Garland for 31-24 upset.

Plano East jumps out to a 31-7 lead over the Owls, ranked 3rd among Texas 5A teams, then survives a big 4th quarter rally when a 4th down gamble allows the Panthers to run out the clock.

Plano East grabs the lead early when junior Riko Smalls (Virginia) hits Chris Slater (Baylor baseball) with a 32-yard TD pass, 1 play after LB/TE Keenan Robinson (Texas) recovers a fumble. The Panthers push the lead to 14-0 on Dallas Bush's 1-yard TD run before Dwight Hamilton returns the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a score.

Smalls connects with Slater again, for a 9-yard TD, and Phillip Oladeji adds a 2-yard TD run for a 28-7 lead at the half. Smalls goes 11-of-16 for 117 yards and 2 TDs while rushing for 41 yards.

Plano East stalls Garland's rally when CB Vance Ibewuike (Tarleton State) intercepts Greg Hunter in the end zone on the 1st possession of the 2nd half. Garland closes with 17 points in the 4th quarter as Hunter hits David Little with a 12-yard TD pass and junior WR Jacques Caldwell (Louisville) adds a 13-yard TD run.

Plano East includes OT Louis Finner (Utah), NT Zach Skelton (Midwestern State), and S Collin Zych (Harvard).

Garland includes WB/S Malcolm Williams (Texas), junior DE Chancey Aghayere (LSU), junior DT Casey Walker (Oklahoma), junior DT Joel Wilson (Buffalo), junior CB Jarrett Ben (Rice).
