Game Notes

Crenshaw Cougars surprise Taft, and continue the Toreadors' championship disappointments with a 20-14 upset in the Coliseum.

Crenshaw avenges a 1-point loss in the season opening, and hands coach Troy Starr his 6th loss in 7 finals appearances at Taft, while capturing the Cougars 2nd City Championship and 1st since 1992.

Darian Hagan Jr. (Cal) one ups Taft's Jamere Holland (USC) in a battle of big stars and big plays. Hagan hauls in Marquis Curtis' 85-yard TD w/ 4:00 left in the 4th quarter. Hagan then makes the final play, leaping over junior Jeshua Anderson (Washington State) to intercept sophomore star Exavier Johnson's (Utah State) 4th down heave to the end zone w/ :26 left.

Crenshaw strikes a huge blow early as junior Raymond Carter (UCLA) sprints for an 82-yard TD on the 3rd play of the game. Carter finishes with 169 yards. But then defenses take over. The Cougars go up 14-0 on Curtis' 15-yard TD pass to WR/DB John Thompson (San Jose State) following a fumble deep in Taft territory.

With Johnson battling through an injured hand, and star junior RB Malcolm Smith (USC) limited with an elbow injury, Taft struggles. However, Johnson hits Holland with a 44-yard TD pass on the 1st possession of the 2nd half.

Then Holland beats Hagan deep, and hauls in a 70-yard bomb for a TD to tie it 14-14. Holland has 6 catches for 162 yards, while adding an INT, a pass break-up and a critcial 4th down stop in the 4th quarter. Johnson finishes with over 250 yards passing.

Crenshaw includes FB R.J. Garrett (Cal), G/DT Adonis Davis (San Jose State), junior DT Brian Price (UCLA), junior LB Elijah-Blu Smith (Colorado State), junior LB Terrell Turner (Oregon).

Taft includes RB Andre Harris (Idaho), WR/DB Chris Wellington (Nevada) and junior OT Darion Weems (Oregon). <
