Game Notes

Brother Rice Warriors hang on for a 14-7 win over Hudsonville, and their 6th state championship.

The Warriors make the big plays in a defensive struggle, intercepting Josh Lucas 5 times. Joey Henry picks Lucas twice in the 1st half, and junior Kaunda Hancock makes 3 interceptions in the 2nd half.

Brother Rice gets a pair of TD passes from backup QB Andy Lentz in the 1st half. Lentz hooks up with Henry for a 16-yard TD in the 1st quarter. However, the Eagles answer with a 1-yard TD run by Andrew DeWeerd, who runs for 97 yards. Junior Drew Bolhius runs for 23 yards, and adds 70 more on 6 receptions.

The Warriors take a 14-7 lead on Lentz's 9-yard TD pass to tight end Charlie Gantt (Michigan State) w/ :25 left in the 1st half. Lentz takes many of the snaps over junior starter Mike Cappetto (Duke). Brother Rice rides fullback John Goebel (Cincinnati), who rushes for 84 yards.

In the 2nd half, it is all defense as Hudsonville stops the Warriors' attack. However, Hancock stops 3 Eagles' drives in Rice territory. Hancock's first interception is a diving 1-handed pick in the corner of the end zone. His second, wrestling away from a receiver, stops another drive. His final one, is an amazing 1-handed bobbling grab while using his other hand to fend off the receiver, at the goalline in the final minutes.

Brother Rice also includes junior OT Darris Sawtelle (Tennessee), LB Matt Pickens (Western Michigan), junior LB Chris Colasanti (Penn State), junior TE Dan Youssif (Eastern Michigan).
