Game Notes

Bergen Catholic stops Don Bosco Prep 13-10 to capture the Group IV Parochial Championship in Giants Stadium and snap the Crusaders' 8-game losing streak to their rivals.

All-American RB/LB Brian Cushing (USC) is the dominating force preventing the Ironmen from three-peating. Cushing has 2 TDs, 221 total yards, 5 tackles for loss and 2 1/2 sacks. Defenses dominate in the talent-loaded contest, keeping both teams off the scoreboard through the 1st quarter.

WR/RB/DB Michael Ray Garvin (Florida State) puts Don Bosco ahead 7-0 in the 2nd quarter, fighting in for a 2-yard run after being pushed out at the 2 following a 53-yard run. Garvin finishes with 131 yards rushing. Garvin is one of 2 diminutive stars for the Ironmen, as junior WR/DB Ryan Lindsey (Boston College) catches 4 passes and also has 2 picks on defense.

After Garvin's TD, Cushing strikes back for the Crusaders. Cushing cuts through the line, and breaks free for an 80-yard TD on the next play from scrimmage tying it 7-7. Late in the first half, Cushing puts Bergen Catholic in scoring position with a 22-yard gain off a screen pass, and then Cushing catches a 9-yard TD pass over Garvin from Brad Hartung (Georgetown) with :02 left in the half. However, the lead is just 13-7 after DE Jason Mills (Lafayette) blocks the PAT.

Cushing gets 150 of his 190 yards rushing in the 1st half. In the 2nd half, the Crusaders' defense continues making life miserable for sophomore Matt Simms (Louisville). Simms, son of Phil Simms, finishes just 8-of-22 for 67 yards and 2 INTs, while getting sacked 5 times. Joe Marcoux (Villanova) pulls Don Bosco to within 13-10 w/ a 25-yard FG in the 3rd quarter. But the Ironmen can get no closer.

Bergen Catholic also includes WR Isaiah Williams (Maryland), TE/LB James Dray (Stanford), G Dan Larkin (New Hampshire), DT Greg DeMarco (Fordham), S/WR Wolver Jean-Pierre (James Madison), CB Matt McGuire (Iona), OT Rob Petrosino (Holy Cross), junior punter Kevin Mollema (Iona), junior G Frank Rizzo (Fordham), junior CB Joe Dottino (Georgetown).

Don Bosco also includes RB/LB/DB Darius Mann (Louisville), TE/DT Corey Wootton (Northwestern), OT Brian Roche (Louisville), OT/DT Nate Nurse (Rutgers), junior LB Kenneth Mahoney (Fordham), junior S/WR Brian Callahan (Monmouth) and star sophomore DE Justin Trattou (Notre Dame).
