Game Notes

Southlake-Carroll Dragons exact revenge, and capture their 3rd state title in 4 years, beating Katy 34-20.

The Tigers, who beat the Dragons in the 2003 championship game, are the only team to beat Southlake Carroll in their 4-year run in Class 5A. However, this time Katy is no match for SLC's high-powered offense and big play defense.

Greg McElroy (Alabama) connects on a pair of TD passes with Corbin Smiter (Rice), including a 43-yard connection, to help the Dragons open a 17-0 lead. SLC preserves a 17-3 lead in the first half as safety Joseph Agnew (Rice) picks Katy QB Andy Dalton (TCU) twice deep in SLC territory.

Katy strikes quickly in the 2nd half, scoring 10 points to cut it to 17-13, with the big strike a 66-yard TD pass from Dalton to Will Thompson. However, SLC answers as McElroy hits McKay Jacobson (BYU) for a 26-yard TD, and finishes it off with a 33-yard TD pass to Evan Fentress (Rice).

McElroy's 4 TDs give him 58 for the season, breaking the Texas high school record. He goes 21-of-31 for 324 yards. Smiter has 8 catches for 133 yards, while Jacobson catches 6 for 110 yards. Sophomore Tre Newton (Texas) runs for 171 yards on 19 carries.

SLC also includes LB Patrick Benoist (Vanderbilt), guard Justin Drescher (Colorado), tackle Mike Prince (Missouri) and WR Clint Renfro (TCU), junior G Robert Hill (Utah State), junior DE Kyle Russo (North Texas), junior LB Justin Padron (North Texas), junior Bryce Saldi (UNLV), sophomore backup QB Riley Dodge (North Texas).

Dalton goes 18-of-35 for 235 yards and 1 TD, while adding a TD on the ground. But Dalton is also picked 4 times. Junior WR Michael Fuda (Rice) catches 10 for 193 yards. Katy includes offensive lineman Bryan Ferris (SW Texas State), sophomore RB Andre Dean (UCLA).
