Module: Linguistics – Subject: Teaching Methodology
Course Description
The present course will have as task to examine the
different aspects of foreign language teaching, which involves examining the following: the context of language teaching,
language policy and planning, teaching goals and objectives, needs analysis, the syllabus, teachers and learners, teaching
approaches/methods, classroom management, teaching the language components as well as skills, and finally testing and assessment.
Course Objectives
The present course will have as objectives to:
Introduce students to the main concepts and issues in language teaching, especially teaching
a foreign language
Examine the different developments in teaching methods/approaches with a view on the principles
underlying them
Acquaint students with types of syllabuses along with the principles that underlie them
Cause students to consider the advantages and the drawbacks of the different theories and
methods they are acquainted with, with a view to judge their suitability and/or relevance to the potential teaching situations
which they may encounter.
Enable students to get acquainted with the different techniques and strategies used for teaching
the language components along with the skills.
Course Development and Methodology
The following materials will be part and parcel of
the course: selected readings, lectures, group/class discussions, charts, computer projections and assignments.
Evaluation
A final written exam based on all the material presented
during the course.
