EDEN GARDENS
Eden gardens in CALCUTTA is the pride of India.Eden is the mecca of Indian cricket. It is the largest ground in INDIA.It has a six digit capacity and the atmosphere there during a match is absolutely electric. Eden has played host to the final of the RELIANCE CUP in 1987.In 1996 it was the venue for the world cup semi-final between India and Srilanka. Calcutta is a cricket crazy city. They storm the stadium whenever there is a cricket match on.
In february 1987,there was a high-scoring encounter between INDIA and PAKISTAN.India's 238 for 6 was overhauled by Pakistan because of a superb innings from SALIM MALIK. The inaugural match against SOUTH-AFRICA was played in the EDEN. Who can forget the last ball win which SACHIN TENDULKAR got for us against SOUTH-AFRICA in november 1993. On the Whole , EDEN is a lucky ground for INDIA.It is a happy hunting ground for many indian batsman like Azhar.
The Barabati stadium,CUTTACK looks very much like a caribbean ground. Swaying palm trees,a gentle breeze and a relaxed atmosphere reminds one of the Kensington Oval in Barbados. There is a lanky clock tower that adds an air of uniqueness to BARABATI.
In 1988 INDIA had decisively brushed beaten England by 5 wickets. In 1994 in a high scoring match against the West-Indies India beat them by 8 wickets. One bad memory is that in 1990 when we lost to Sri Lanka.
CHINNASWAMY STADIUM
Named after the veteran cricket administrator ,the stadium in BANGALORE has the busy Mahatma Gandhi road at one end,a shopping paradise and artery, and sprawling affice buildings at the other.
India defeated Australia by three wickets in october 1989,but were convincingly beaten by England on two occasions - in january 1985 and later in 1993.In the very first international played by india they beat Sri-lanka here,by 6 wickets. And who can forget the memorable world-cup match between India and Pakistan ,where India beat Pakistan in a very important quater-final.
FEROZESHAH KOTLA
Just as the visitor to the historical city of NEW DELHI passes under the India Gate to enter the old city,he comes across the quite and unassuming FEROZESHAH KOTLA Ground ,rather dusty and forlorn, unlike the rest of the city which is green and well laid out. India won 4 matches in a row here. They were against : Sri-lanka (in 1982), Australia (in 1986 ),Srilanka again (in 1987) and Auatralia (in 1987). Then in 1989 India went down to New Zealand by a huge margin of 107 runs in 1994.
Wankhede stadium BOMBAY is not as huge as Eden but the people who fill this stadium up can make equal amount of noise as the ones in the EDEN. So it can be imagined how the atmosphere must be when INDIA play's a match here. The bombayites love the game and they love their SACHIN TENDULKAR.The NORTH STAND in the stadium is the place to be when a match is on.The people of bombay are very cricket literate. They give a kind of atmosphere which cannot be found anywhere else. In the 1987 world cup India lost to England here. Then we lost to West Indies in 1989.In the last world cup too we lost to Australia here. But that match will be remembered for the attack that Sachin had launched on the Australian bowlers. The aussies had no idea what to do.And the crowd was going mad.Man!!!How I remember that day. That was probebly the best day in my life so far!!
This beautiful stadium in MOHALI,CHANDIGARH is one of it's kind in INDIA. It is so because because it is the only true fast wicket in India. The wicket has grass on it which makes it a pretty fast track. The ground is also different because of the floodlights.Unlike the conventional 4 floodlights, here there are 16 floodlights .It is because there is an air base nearby and so the floodlights could not be made of the normal height.
In november 1993,India beat South-Africa here by 43 runs in the Hero cup. Vinod Kambli scored 86 in that match.
CHEPAUK STADIUM
Chepauk Stadium ,MADRAS is close to the Marina beach ,but yet in the heart of the city flanked by Walajah Road ,Triplicane and the ubiquitios canal.
In a thriller of a match in the Reliance cup 1987,India lost just by one run against the Australians, scoring 269 in reply to the Aussie's 270 for 6. In 1994 India got the better of West Indies by 4 wickets.
