The Presidents Column

Comments from our Running Club President Mr. Ken Ramondino.

Has Our Spring Sprung?

Well, we made it through another winter running season. Soon we'll be putting away the polypropylene and Gore-Tex and donning the Cool-max (with the exception of George Erkmann who'll just be switching his heavier tank tops for lighter ones). We'll be embracing the warmer weather and training for the racing season. But before you lean back and languorously contemplate the warm sun on your faces, fields of green grass and running in shorts let me discuss an important matter. For the New Hyde Park Running Club, almost a mission as important as providing for our present membership is building new membership. Wouldn't it be nice to come to a Sunday run and see 15 to 20 people? Or a monthly meeting or other event of 30 to 40 people? How about a race of the month with a sea of NHP Runners Club shirts? (The shirts are on the way). Or meeting a few people for some interval work on a weekday evening? Sounds nice, right?

But for these and other wonderful events to happen we need new members! Members are the life blood of any organization. Clubs that consistently attract new members are vibrant and dynamic. Have you ever been to a Plainview-Old Bethpage RRC meeting? Standing room only and alive with activity and activities. NHP currently has about 50 members and we certainly have accomplished a lot. Imagine what we could do with 60, 70 or even 100 members! That's where we need your help.

Consider it the everyone's responsibility to bring in new members, not just the executive board's or the membership committee's. We're in this together! So please bring someone to a meeting or a Sunday run. Tack some posters up in the local stores. Talk up the club to runners you meet. If we each do our part to increase membership, we will all reap the benefit of a stronger, more vital club
