I have been at a loss this week. “Spanish Steps” had it’s release on Monday and naturally when any band/artist release a single/album, you can expect a bit of promotion. So, I called warners for a run down which included ‘Shift’ on 22nd February and ‘Good Morning with Anne & Nick’ on 29th and to my dismay Morten failed to surface on either. So I am a youngish Woman, at 25 a lack of sleep to be up watching these programmes won’t kill me, but I had to sit back and wonder why we all put up with this.
Who the fuck are WEA anyway?? and who the fuck do they think we are? Desperate, brainless juveniles after a quick drool over our idol? An expendable commodity so it doesn’t matter if they give out the wrong info? I am sick of the whole damned thing. I feel that I am just banging my head against a brick wall and I am pissed off by the injustice of WEA towards a-ha and members and therefore the injustice to us. You see, we are only the idiots who lined their pockets through the 80’s by supporting the fresh signing, when a-ha were playing the game the record company way and were exploitable, making us so too. But now punishing a-ha for their integrity and independence, deeming them no more success worthy than the Nolans, we have become expendable nobodies.
The way I see it though is that a-ha’s music, Morten’s music is no worse than anybody elses and if the general public will buy Phil Collins, Celine Dion and the like, well “Spanish Steps” could be a hit as it blows those aforesaid mainstreamers out of the flow of things.
It is so hard to know if the promotions staff are slack, if the Wea big chiefs won’t pay up for the exposure or if Morten himself just cannot be arsed to do the rounds, but one thing for sure is that I am sick of us getting the backlash, fighting for every release date and actual copy and promotion we have. we are out here waiting to buy the music, waiting to support and if our loyality isn’t as important as stealing audiences from the banal likes of Blur/Oasis and the hyped, tepid ,momentary trends, well maybe it is time we gave up.
This whole thing, once a pleasure has become a chore and personally I’m too old for this shit!!
