PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES CAMERON R. HUME AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE DEMOCRATIC AND POPULAR REPUBLIC OF ALGERIA

President Clinton today announced his intention to nominate Cameron R. Hume, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, to be United States Ambassador to the Democratic and Popular Republic Algeria.

Mr. Hume, of New York City, joined the Foreign Service in 1970, following service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Libya. His overseas assignments include Palermo, Tunis, Damascus, Beirut, and the Holy See. He has served as a member of the Secretary of State's Planning Staff and as a desk officer for South Africa. He has had three tours of duty at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, most recently as Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs.

Mr. Hume graduated from Princeton University and American University's Washington College of Law. He has been an International Affairs Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, a Fellow at Harvard's Center for International Affairs, and a guest scholar at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He has written two books and numerous articles on diplomacy and diplomatic history. He has been awarded the Meritorious Honor Award, the Superior Honor Award twice, and the Distinguished Honor Award. He speaks Arabic, French, and Italian.
