Play Dough: A Recipe from Mrs. Johnson's Files
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
- 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
- food coloring
- Mix the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
Add water, oil, and food coloring.
Cook over low to medium heat for 3-5 minutes.
Keep stirring until the mixture forms a solid ball--it gets very stiff, so use a strong wooden spoon.
Knead to a nice smoothness.
- When it is cool completely, seal in plastic container (old frosting jars are nice) or ziploc bag. If you use a coffee can, place dough in plastic bags first.
- This dough can be used over and over and will keep for at least a month.
- It's nice to make red, yellow, and blue batches and allow only two at a time:
- red and yellow
- red and blue
- yellow and blue
- to allow them to continue to learn about the mixing of secondary colors from the three primaries (RYB). After they have used them for a while, let all three out at once, with the reminder of the horrible color they turn when mixed (they will).
