An Introduction

What is Wormhole?

Wormhole is a Multi-User Dungeon or Multi-User Dimension (MUD). It's basically a place where people can log on, assume a different identity and exist for a while in an strange parallel universe. Unlike a lot of the MUDs of its type that are around, the basic theme behind Wormhole isn't sword and sorcery fantasy but good old science fiction. If you're familiar with the Dungeons and Dragons type role playing games, then having a character on a MUD will be going one step onward - adding an extra dimension.

Instead of your basic swords and axes, Wormhole features guns with bullets, energy weapons, grenades and even landmines!

What is happens in Wormhole?

The basic thing you have to do is to become more powerful. The way to do this is to get experience points by destroying certain computer generated 'monsters'. Some of these 'monsters' - known as 'mobs' (short for mobiles) carry pieces of equipment that can further add to your deadliness. Mobs are also your basic source of income, and you'll need money to buy food, weapons and clothing.

As you fight the mobs, there will be times when you lose all your energy and die. Don't worry, though - dying in Wormhole is not the end and is only a minor setback. In no time you'll be back, albeit in a slightly weakened state, and resume your adventures.

Of course, like life, Wormhole offers you many routes. If getting more powerful isn't your idea of fun, then there are other opportunities too. Because other people are logged on at the same time, you have the chance to talk to people from all over the world.

Wormhole is really a place where you can make new friends (and enemies!), where alliances are forged and where anything can happen... You can even team up with other people to venture into new and dangerous worlds - thus ensuring a better chance of survival for everybody in the group.

When you first create a new character, you can pick your new name, the race (a range from the basic human to shaggy deep-pile Wookies) and the profession (choose from a wide selection which includes mindblasting Scanners and powerful Jedis). Your character, once formed will have strengths and weaknesses depending on your choice.

Warning

At this point I've got to issue a warning. MUDs can be addictive... OK that's an understatement - they ARE VERY addictive. If you're weak-willed and have a nervous disposition, I've got to say that this might not be for you. On the other hand, if you like a challenge and are willing to meet other people, work in a team and generally have a bit of fun, then come visit Wormhole!
