Led Zeppelin
• was formed in 1968 by
Jimmy Page and Peter Grantfrom the remnants of the Yardbirds.
• performed first as the New Yardbirds to
fullfill a former contract
• they chose the name Led Zeppelin for its irony
and as a joke since alead zeppelin certainly can't float.
It was a term coined byKeith Moon of the Rolling Stones, but Page
changed the spelling from
"Lead Zeppelin" to "Led Zeppelin" so that people
wouldnot mispronounce it.
• one possible name the band had thought of
before settling on Led Zeppelinwas "Mad Dogs"
• in the early days, the band opened for shows
like Iron Butterfly andJethro Tull
• was forced to perform under a name other than
Led Zeppelin once in theNetherlands because a woman named
Eva von Zeppelin claimedthey disgraced her name and threatened to sue
them. So theyplayed their show under the alias, The Nobs so
they wouldn't offend herany further.
• Led Zeppelin I was recorded in less than
30 hours, and though creditwas given to Jimmy Page for writing
all the songs, Robert Plantdid have a hand in writing the lyrics. He was
still tied to a former contractand was unable to put his name on them.
• Led Zeppelin II was recorded in many different
studios and was put togetherwhile the band was touring
America.
• it also went gold the day it was released.
• Led Zeppelin III was recorded at Headly
Grange, the Rolling Stones mobilerecording truck, but all of the
songs were written at a Welshretreat where the band stayed after a long
tour.
• The inside cover of Led Zeppelin IV was
painted by a friend of JimmyPage, but was taken from a
tarot card generally meaningthat one must not proceed into the future
without contemplation and
reflection.
• On the back cover of the untitled album, the
poster on the wall is apicture of a dying man on a
stretcher that ironicallyreads "Every day someone receives relief from
hunger."
• "Stairway to Heaven" is officially the
greatest song never
released. Officially, the greatest song that
was
released, to date, is Whitney Houston's version
of "I will AlwaysLove You."
• The children on the cover of Houses of the
Holy aren't actually naked. They are wearing flesh colored
bodysuits.
• Though the album, Houses of the Holy, was
released in 1973, the song
"Houses of the Holy" was
released in 1975 onPhysical Graffiti.
• The Song Remains the Same was filmed in 1973
and released in 1976 becauseof personal problems within
the band, but mostly becausethey couldn't find visual footage to match up
with theaudio samples. Each band member then created his
own fantasy sequence inorder to fill in the gaps.
• The soundtrack to TSRS is not identical to the
movie. (that wasn't toohard to notice ;-)
• Presence was recorded with Plant in a
wheelchair in a very short periodof time under very high
pressure, yet they still
managedto pull off an excellent album.
• The cover of Presence was a joke on 2001:
Space Odyssey.
• In Through the Out Door was the last studio
album recorded by Led Zeppelinin 1979. The whole thing was
carried along by John PaulJones.
• Coda was a posthumous release of studio and
live recordings compiledby Jimmy Page in 1982.
the word "coda" in music means
the end.
• The closest things to a Zeppelin reunion have
been the Live Aid concertin 1985, Atlantic's 40th
Anniversary Party in 1988, andthe Page/Plant Reunion.
• Led Zeppelin was inducted into the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
• They receivedLifetime Achievement Honors at
the Indian Music Awards in1995.
• In 1988 the three surviving members were
offered $100 million by UnitedArtist Records to do 1 album, 1
video, and 1 tour. They declined.
• "Stairways to Heaven" is an album released in
1992 in Australiacontaining 12 different versions
on "Stairway toHeaven" by 12 different artists.
