As I sit here typing this critique, I listen to Celine Dion sing "My Heart Will Go On", and think about the movie that made me feel respect once more for films, after I had been burned by the experience of "Batman and Robin", a highly anticipated film. After seeing it, I was nervous about seeing a movie that everyone was 'dying to see.' This film has to be THE easiest one I've judged in all my years of criticizing films. I learned how to heckle the lamest moives from Mike & the 'bots, and I learned to be picky from my parents. THIS movie...it cannot be touched by any foul tidings. The story, the music, the acting.. it brought to life the 86 year-old history of the doomed ship. James Cameron did an excellent job of re-creating the ship itself, the costume-designers did an excellent job of re-creating the styles of 1912, and the writer/historians intelligently re-created the people who originally sailed on TITANIC, along with the new faces of ill-fated lovers Jack Dawson and Rose DeWittbucater(whose love story may not be fiction after all, it is rumored. I envy Rose if she and Jack were real people!) The story in itself..everyone knows about TIATNIC. But not everybody knows about the people who lived it. The heroine, Rose(played by Kate Winslet), is the only daughter of a controlling mother who arranges for her to marry a rich jerk(evilly portrayed by Billy Zane) who wants Rose to obey at his every whim. Rose soon falls for a poor artist named Jack Dawson(played by *shivers*Leonardo DiCaprio!) who teaches her that you can trust people in the world, and even learn to love. One person who was definitely a real person on TITANIC was the legendary Molly Brown, portrayed by Kathy Bates. Other famous people to look for are John Jacob Astor, Isador Strauss, and various other people. This movie will make you laugh, cry(well, "sob" is a better word) and think at the same time. I do think that it deserved the 11 Oscars it won. I was especially happy when James Horner won an award for the movie's score. The music is unforgettable. Not just because Celine Dion's song is on the album, but the instrumentals can tell every moment of the story. Sadly, since the film is not on video yet, I have to listen to the soundtrack, and the music helps me remember various scenes from the movie. That's how well-composed it is- the music tells every detail of what's going on. Bottom line: If you haven't seen TITANIC yet, I feel really bad for you. You'd be missing out on a masterpiece (considering it's now beat out STAR WARS for box-office records. Oh well.) But if you haven't seen it yet, and don't want to wait until it comes to video, hurry now, because it's been pulled from most theaters near where I live. And yes, if you've heard and are wondering about it-it IS an addictive movie! I saw it four times. My Rating The Force Is With It! * * * *
