For about a year, I waited for this movie to open. The first release date was set for
November 14, 1997. Then I found out it had been postponed until June 5th. So, I patiently waited
until then. Folks, if you are as eager to see this film as I was, you're in for a treat. Truman is here!
This film is about a seemingly normal guy named Truman Burbank. He seems to have a good life.
A nice car, well-kept house, a doting mother, a sweet wife, a good job(as an insurance salesman), and plenty
of friends. But, it just seems TOO perfect, doesn't it?
The movie opens with Truman going to work, when something drops out of the sky and crashes onto the street.
Truman is surprised to see a stage light lying smashed on the pavement. Later in the day, the radio says that
a plane "was losing parts as it flew overhead."
Why would there be a stagelight? As our hero later finds out, his life is actually a popular television show
broadcasted to the whole world 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and it has done so for the past
30 years of Truman's life.
As the film goes on, Truman slowly figures out what makes his "life" run. He discovers everything is just a set
plan. And now he has to figure out how to escape from it.
I really can't say much about the plotline, because I could unwittingly release key points and accidentally
spoil the film for potential viewers. My basic statement: it pokes fun at peoples' obsession with television, the people
who are constantly in front of the TV. It takes a hard swing at soap operas, with one scene of the movie depicting the
bittersweet loss of Truman's father, and his forbidden love with a woman from his past, the one real thing Truman has during
his life.
If you are interested in paranoia, or enjoy creepy situations where it seems like everyone is out to get you(a lot like high
school, hmm?), "The Truman Show" is right for you. Great plotline, a spectacular dramatic turn by Jim Carrey, lessons to be
learned, and a touch of intelligence make this a movie worth seeing again and again. And as Truman would say, "If I don't see you
later, 'Good afternoon', 'Good evening', and 'Good night'!"

Rating: The Force is With It! * * * *
