"...What was she for Halloween/Ugliest girl you've ever seen..."

Spoken in the true words of Courtney Love. This Hole page will probably be under construction for a long time, but the first thing I'm putting are basic ideas. I love Hole, they are my absolute favourite band. I've also bought tapes of lots of people somehow related to Courtney Love (not as in family). Some of this stuff came from Breakfast #5 (a special Hole issue), and while writing this, I haven't even had that photocopied yet! I would also love to hear from other Hole fans! So, click on anything below or read the "Live Through This" review I wrote for Breakfast #5 (slightly edited).

"Live Through This"-Hole-DGC-1994
This is a true masterpiece, and a lot of the credit should go to Courtney (I think she mainly wrote the songs, correct me if I'm wrong), but unlike NIN, Hole is a BAND (NIN is primarily Trent Reznor). You really see all of Courtney's sides throught her songwriting, whether a ditsy "prom queen" (with Amanda de Cadenet at the Oscars) or a becoming actress ("Larry Flynt"). From "Somebody kill me, kill me pills" to "I want my baby, where is the baby?". There is a repetitive theme here: mother's milk, but she mentions Barbie dolls and pills ("Doll Parts"), mosh pits -?- ("Asking for It"), former beaus ("Violet"), and the riot grrrl revolution of Olympia, WA ("Rock Star").

Of course, one of the ways to review this would be to compare it to Hole's first LP, "Pretty on the Inside" (1990), but I haven't found a copy of it (at least, not here, but on the Internet of course I have). This way I can see "Live Through This" as an album for itself, forget about past works. One of the strangest things here is though Courtney wrote this album pre-suicide, she ultimately predicted the future with those lines from "Asking For It", "If you live through this with me, I swear that I will die for you".

"Softer, Softest" holds sarcasm against her childhood with "Pee girl gets the belt, it only makes me cry". Courtney was called Pee Girl as a child. She and the band obviously put much-an-effort into this, although the timing for the release was bad, being around 4 days after Kurt's death. Even though this was released in 1994, 2 1/2 years ago, it is still the best album to buy in its genre if you don't already have it.
