Longer and slower than Quentin´s other movies, "Jackie Brown" doesn´t benefit of his writing. The movie is based on one of Elmore Leonard´s thrillers: "Rum Punch". Quentin didn´t confined himself on filming the book - he transformed the unlikely heroess Jackie Burke, to a dark woman (that´s why the name Brown), to have an excuse to work with Pam Grier, which he considers an icon of the "blaixploitation" in the 70s. He also changed the scenary, refusing Miami and using his youth knowledges in South Bay, near Los Angeles, where he used to live.
Quentin drastically reduced the body count on this picture, comparing to his previous movies. There are only four dead people on the film, and the audience can only see one corpse. However, he extended the movie running-time (two hours and a half), and he gave much more attention to characters, specially those made by Pam Grier, Robert Forster (another veteran actor which his revitalized by Q.T.) and Samuel L.Jackson, the only repetant of "Pulp Fiction".
"Jackie Brown" benefits of Quentin´s abruptly and corrosive humour, well distributed on the supporting role actors: Bridget Fonda like the blond surfer girl, who spends her day watching t.v. and smoking hax. She his superbly characterized in a little dialogue with Samuel L.Jackson: Ordell (Jackson): Already smoking ? That shit is going to rob you your ambition. Melanie (Fonda): No, if you´re ambition is just to smoke a joint and watch tv. Robert De Niro is a convicted almost miserable, and very unpatient. «I don´t know how you could ever rob a bank?» ask Fonda character Melanie. Michael Keaton is the cop, who is romantically linked to Jackie and is involved on her net to get Ordell´s money. Robert Forster plays a bond bailer, who also falls in love for Jackie, and helps her to get money and leave the country. Pam Grier is Jackie, who uses her charm to persuade everyone doing what they didn´t want too. She had a miserable (her husband was in jail so she lost her chance to work in major airlines companies) and she sees the 1st year of the rest of her life in Ordell´s money.
