Vette    Tips    and    Suggestions

After having torn down several C-4 model Corvette engines, all of which have run nothing but synthetic engine oil, take it from me, it is worth every penny. The grey Vette pictured on the previous page has 130,000 miles on it. When the engine was torn down, it looked almost brand new on the inside. The crank, cylinder block bores and almost everything else still speced out to the original factory specifications! The only machine work that had to be done on the shortblock was top secret performance enhancements! The crank is going right back in the way it came out, with only some cleaning up done on the casting. Same with the engine block too. The original pistons are being returned to it, and the cylinders will only be roughed up so the new rings will seat. If you truely like your Vette or any other car, then make sure you use ONLY synthetic engine oil! My personal favorite oil is Castrol's Syntech Engine Oil, and I generaly use the heavier weights for normal use and a lighter weight during the racing season, for the additional horsepower gains, and still get great protection. Usinghte lighter weight oil helps the egine turn freer and faster, and also improves gas mileage. On top of that (contrary to popular belief), I only change my oil every 8,000 miles! It pays for itself in the long and short runs!

****** If you like your onboard computer and other delicate electronics, don't jump start someone elses car from you late model computer controlled Vette! Even a quick brush of reverse polarity can ruin many expensive electronic components. Also, if someones battery is dead, usually you have no idea why, and a malfunction in THIER electical system, can affect yours right thru the battery connection. If you do jump start someone elses car (or lawn mower) then please, be extreemly carefull!

****** DRIVE your Corvette often, and wave to those of us that you see driving ours! The motto "Save The Wave" is alive and well among Vette enthusiasts, and we all like and appreciate a hearty wave from other Vette owners, as we are generally a likeable and friendly group...

****** Join a local or national Corvette club. This is one of the best sources for information and Vette related activiteis that there is available. If and when you do join, be an active participant int he clubs activities. You will be glad you did.

****** READ all you can about Vettes, there are many different magazines devoted to Corvettes and Chevy's in general, and these are great sources and resources for the auto enthusiast.

****** Do you like bent rims? NO? Then check your tire pressures often, even if you have the low pressure warning system. With the very wide tires and low profile, they are more apt to be punctured becasue there is more of a contact patch with the ground and thus, a greater chance of picking up sharp skikey things that let the air out. When the tires are even slightly low, it gratly increases you chances of bending or scratching a rim because of the smaller volume of air in the low profile tires.

****** Will the new 315 sized tires fit on a stock C-4 witdth rim and clear the rear fenders? YES! I just put a new set of 315's on the rear of my '89 with the stock rims, and they worked just fine, and greatly improved the ride and handling, and the cornering traction is much better. Will let ou know about the take off traction when I get it down to the Dragstrip and see how it does, but I am sure it will be much better than before. I highly suggest making the change to the wider 315's.

****** Stay tuned, more to follow....got a question about your C-4 model Vette, just ask and I will TRY to answer it, or point you in the right direction anyway.
