First-time betta owners...
The number one mistake for first time betta owners is to over-feed their fish.
More is not better for your betta. If you over feed your fish it is like living
in a small room and being fed turkey. If your new owner gives you 10 turkeys on
the first day you are happy. You eat a leg and leave the rest for latter. Day 2
you get another 10 turkeys, the first 10 are old so you eat a wing from one of
the new turkeys, now there are 20 turkeys, this continues for weeks. Soon the
stench from the rotting turkeys are choking you and it is unclean so you start
to get skin infections. Then you show serious signs of illness. Your new owner
then wonders, what is wrong with you, and adds antibiotics and more turkeys.
What you want your owner to do is remove you from that wretched place, clean it
and then give you only the food you need no more, no less.
How much does a betta eat?
A betta eats at one time about enough flakes to cover a dime or a nickel, one flake
thick. It is best to feed 2 or three times a day if possible, but
once a day is fine. Any food not eaten with in about 20 minutes should be
removed or it will rot! Remove the food with a turkey baster. (Remember the turkeys!)
