I.S. Timeline

 

 
In 1989 the International Studies Program begins:  90 students in 10th grade.   Globalization of the curriculum focuses on the World Literature, World History, and Biology classes.
In 1990 180 students in the 10th and 11th grades were in the program.   Globalization of the curriculum in the eleventh grade focuses on the American Literature, US History, and Chemistry courses.  First crosscultural homestay exchange with Brescia, Italy: 15 IHS students and 15 Italian students participate.
In 1991 270 students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades.  12th grade curriculum in International Studies focuses on the British Literature course along with a new global issues seminar.  First community service requirement instituted: 30 hours per year for seniors.  First exchange with Krefeld, Germany, one of Charlotte's sister cities: 15 IHS students and 1 students from Gymnasium am Moltkenplatz participate. 
In 1992 First exchange with Krefeld, Germany, one of Charlotte's sister cities: 15 HS students and 15 students from Gymnassium sister cities participated.
In 1992 the first exchange with students in another of our sister cities.  Limoges, France:  15 upper level French students from IHS and 15 students from Lycee Auguste Renoir  participate.
In 1994, First exchange with Rugby, England: 15 IHS seniors and 15 British students from Ashlawn School participate.  The exchange is offered to seniors to complement their British Literature course.
In 1995, New offering in the curriculum for 10th and 11th grade classes to replace science requirement and enhance global awareness.  Each seminar course focuses on geography, foreign cultures and current events in the world outside the US.  In the 10th grade the focus is on Africa, Asia, and Europe.  In the 11th grade it is on the Americas to complement the study of American literature and US History.  IHS students participate in Charlotte Sister Cities exchange with Voronezh, Russia, and Russian students return to Charlotte for music/language camp.
In 1996, First homestay exchange with students in our Chinese sister city, Baoding:   2 students from each Charlotte-Mecklenburg hish school participate in 10-day exchange involving homestays, excursions, school visits, and educational programs.
In 1997, Addition of the 9th grade component of the International Studies Program.   Curriculum consists of English 9, ELP (Economic, Legal, and Political systems), and World Geography.  First exchange with a Spanish-speaking country:  Colegio Americano of Torreon, Mexico will host our upper level Spanish students in November 1997 and Mexican students will come to Independence in the Spring of 1998.
