From: Michael.Farrar@council.camcnty.gov.uk Sent: Friday, January 29, 1999 6:29 PM To: John_Stukes@exchange.dell.com Subject: Stukes family Dear John Stukes, I have found some Stukes in Cambridge at the right period. Mr. Thomas Stukes and Mrs. Susan Bonner, both of Cambridge, were married by licence at Cottenham on 9 October 1743. The title Mr. and Mrs. implies that they were of a higher status, perhaps gentry. Mrs. does not mean necessarily that she was a married woman. They had children baptised at St. Mary the Great church in Cambridge, as follows: Mary, born 12 September, baptised 20 September 1708, buried 29 September 1708. Susanna, born 19 November, baptised 5 December 1709 Mary, born 19 October, baptised 10 November 1710, buried 30 September 1711 Anne, born 9 June, baptised 1 July 1712 Elizabeth, baptised 5 October 1713, buried 26 July 1714 Another couple, William and Helen or Helena Stukes were also having children baptised at the same church. Mary, born 18 June, baptised 2 July 1709 William, born and baptised 20 March 1712/3 Ralph, born and baptised 20 March 1712/3, buried 23 March 1712/3 Children of Thomas and Susannah Stukes, baptised at Great St. Mary church: Hellen, born 7 July, baptised 15 August 1744 William born 22 November, baptised 23 December 1745 Burials at Great St. Mary church, Cambridge: Margarett Stukes, 21 November 1710 Mary Stukes, 1 December 1713 Thomas Stukes, 21 January 1733/4 Hellen Stukes, 28 July 1743 - she left a will Susanna Stukes, 6 February 1780 Helen Stukes, 8 June 1800, aged 55 - she left a will There was another earlier Stukes couple, William and Elizabeth, who had children baptised at St. Giles church in Cambridge: Robert, baptised 6 June 1625 Mary, baptised 5 December 1630 Mary, baptised 15 January 1631/2, buried 18 August 1632 Alice, baptised 17 March 1632/3 Ann, baptised 14 December 1634, buried 16 June 1635 William Stookes and Elizabeth Hibblethud were married by licence at St. Giles church on 8 October 1615. This may well be the same couple, but they must have had children baptised elsewhere before 1625. Other Stukes marriages at St. Giles church: John Stoukes and Mary Levett, 27 May 1622 William Stukes and Elizabeth Burde, 5 October 1628 George Miller and Elizabeth Stuxe, 19 May 1652 Burials at St. Giles church: William, son of William & Elizabeth Stukes, 10 September 1625 Still-born child of the same 1 May 1629 Elizabeth, daughter of the same, 21 June 1632 There was also a Thomas Stewks or Stukes, a member of Magdalene College in the University of Cambridge, entered 1641, BA 1644-5, MA 1648. He was Rector [Pastor] of Molesworth in Huntingdonshire 1667-81 and died in 1681. He was father of the following: Thomas Stukes, a member of Jesus College in the University of Cambridge, entered 1685, BA 1689-90, Ma 1693 (by which time he had moved to another college, Peterhouse), Fellow of Peterhouse 1694, Vicar of Foxton in Cambridgeshire 1698-1722, died 1733 - he left a will Other persons who left wills: Thomas Stukes of Wisbech St. Mary, yeoman, 1737 - this is in the north end of the county of Cambridgeshire William Stukes of Cambridge, gardener, 1651 Mary Stukes of Cambridge, widow, 1709 I should explain that until 1752 the year began on 25 March, not 1 January. Dates between these two days are usually written with a double year, for example 1712/3, where 1712 is what it was then called, and 1713 is what we could call it now. It seems that your family rumour may well be true, though how you work out which of these families you are descended from, I must leave to you! With best wishes, Michael Farrar ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Cambridge History Author: John_Stukes@Dell.com at ~Internet Date: 26/1/99 9:11 AM Hello! My name is John Clayton Stukes. I live in Pflugerville, Texas (190 miles south of Dallas). In researching my family genealogy, I was able to trace the Stukes family back to colonial South Carolina. Rumor has it that the Stukes family came from Cambridge in the 1700's. I've heard of a Thomas Stukes and wife Sarah Bonner Stukes of Cambridge. How could I find more information about the Stukes ancestors in the Cambridge area? Thank you very much for your time.
