Alma was incorporated in 1871. It is named after the postmaster's wife Before that, Alma was called Gumtown because of the large groves of gum trees in the area. Many of the towns cabins were made of the gum trees. A lot has changed since then. In 1926, Clyde and Buck Barrow allegedly held up Commercial Bank. The gang shot and killed Alma's sheriff in a shoot-out north of town. This old bank is still downtown and currently houses the Alma Geneological Library. Look for the bullet holes in the ceiling.
