World's Larger Can of Spinach
The water tower is painted green with an image of---you guessed it--Popeye! It's billed as the World's Largest Spinach Can and is on the hill above the city park.
Alma City Park got a new facelift. On Aug. 24, 1999, Alma residents approved a $995,000 bond issue to fund the planned Water Park and it opened May 2001. The aging swimming pool was renovated into a family water park complex that includes a slide pool with two 130-foot long waterslides, a zero-entry level kiddie pool, a 4,000 sq.ft. sunbathing area, a shade area, a new concession area and a bathhouse. It is officially kown as Alma Aqua Park.

Alma was incorporated in 1871. It is named after the postmaster's wife Before that, Alma was called Gumtown because of the large groves of gum trees in the area. Many of the towns cabins were made of the gum trees. A lot has changed since then.
In 1926, Clyde and Buck Barrow allegedly held up Commercial Bank. The gang shot and killed Alma's sheriff in a shoot-out north of town. This old bank is still downtown and currently houses the Alma Geneological Library. Look for the bullet holes in the ceiling.
