Indianapolis' 500 Mile Race, which was run on Memorial Day
from 1911 until 1974, will get off at 13:00 EDT today, the Sun-
day of Memorial Day Weekend, according to its new schedule,
which means now it is never run on Memorial Day, which was
changed from May 30 in 1970 to the last Monday in May. Or-
iginally it was called Decoration Day, from its inception in 18-
68. The real curiosity is that tomorrow, the last Monday in
May, will be May 30. That happens about once every seven
years.
The race used to begin at 11 a.m. but now begins at 1 p.m. ac-
cording to a change in 2005 to improve television ratings.
