RAMADAN 1998:
AN APPEAL FOR YOUR HELP FROM
THE ISLAMIC HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of health and faith.

The holy month of Ramadan is upon us. This is a time to remember our brothers and sisters in faith who are not as fortunate as us. We are sure you will receive many appeals from organisations, helping those in need due to hunger and poverty or oppressed by injustice. It is in this last field that we work, and for which we ask for your support.

I am sure you realise that over 80% of human rights abuses across the world are committed against Muslims. If we think about last year we see an increase in abuses of Muslims in the UK and globally. Islamophobia is a fast growing problem. In Algeria more innocent Muslims were massacred by the junta,. The imprisonment and torture of Muslims in countries like Egypt, Bahrain, Nigeria, Iraq, India, China, Kashmir and the Phillipines continued. In Turkey, the army's crusade against Islam and Muslims became stronger. They overturned the previous government because it was Muslim. The Turkish courts jailed a newspaper editor for 17 years for his Islamic beliefs.

Europe and America continued to support cruel regimes, and committed abuses against Muslims directly. Official reports in the UK showed that Muslims suffer most in British society. But the government has said it will not introduce legislation that will protect against religious discrimination. It is an historical fact that demonisation of a minority precedes genocide. We must act now to stop this process.

The IHRC was set up to address some of these issues. There are many ways in which you can help us.

Please order some Prisoner of Faith postcards. You can visit the campaign pages for the eight prisoners. Each one of these prisoners is detained simply because they are Muslim. Contact us for a list of places to write to calling for their release. They are depending on their Muslim brothers and sisters to defend their rights - please donate a few minutes of your time for those who have given their all for Islam.

You can also support us by buying your Eid cards (see below) from us, and order some of our leaflets to enclose with them. Thank you for taking the time to read this. We hope you will spare a thought for those defending our rights around the world.

Your brother in Islam,

Sayyed Massoud Shadjareh
