Steve Wickham is, according to Waterboy Mike Scott, the world's greatest rock fiddle player, and Mike should know. Besides playing with the Waterboys, Steve has also played with U2, Elvis Costello, Sinead O'Connor, World Party and Maria McKee, amongst others. He worked on the 2TAKE TIM CD at Lake Studios, Cootehall in County Roscommon, Ireland, with Liam Cunningham engineering. Steve lives in Sligo, in the west of Ireland, with his wife and children. He appears regularly with the Celtic folk group Cadenza.
He has also been working on various musical projects; these include writing music for "Wildfire," a play by Tom McIntyre for the Abbey Theatre, and new records with Diedre Cunningham and Sinead O'Connor. Lately, Steve has also been back onstage (and in studio) with the Waterboys, after a 10-year break.
Aside from being a virtuoso violin/fiddle player, Steve also plays many other instruments, including mandolin, tin whistle, concertina, saxophone, piano, guitar and bones. We are very happy to have given him room to roam on some of these. In fact, we take an ironic pleasure in presenting "Calvary Cross" with him on three instruments- and not a violin in sight! Much thanks to Steve for his incredible talent and generosity. It was magical!
