July 9, 1999 WHAT'S IN ISSUE #15? *
Introduction
Introduction Happy Summer, here comes issue #15! You can stop holding your breath -- the WB has announced the airdate for the season finale of Buffy. "Graduation Day, Part Two" will air Tuesday, July 13. The controversial episode was postponed due to recent school violence. "We have received both praise and criticism for our decision," said Jamie Kellner, CEO of the WB. "To all of the loyal fans of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' please accept my sincere apology for the delay. If we erred, it was on the side of caution. We strongly believe, as do you, that 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' should win Emmys for its consistent quality, which may be unsurpassed anywhere on television." The episode was originally scheduled to air on May 25.
Fret not my little slayers. There's no way the WB is getting rid of Buffy. It's a huge hit for the network and its spin-off, Angel, is starting next season. Buffy received huge press coverage when the WB pulled the show and in this industry there truly is no such thing as bad publicity. My guess is that the ratings for the season finale are going to be huge.

Sneak Peek at the Next
"Buffy" Angel hovers near death, and the rest of Sunnydale teeters on the edge of existence as well. The Mayor is in high spirits as his moment of dark glory approaches. The Ascension is slated to happen at Sunnydale High School's graduation ceremony for the Class of 1999. Not even femme fatale Buffy knows whether she can survive. In the much-anticipated finale, Buffy and her fellow Sunnydale High classmates will wrestle against the mayor, who transforms into a powerful demon during the graduation ceremony. Not only that, but Buffy will have to make some tough decisions. As Angel lies on his deathbed, Buffy will risk everything, including her life, to defy the Watchers Council and attempt to prevent the ascension in a campaign to save the world.
Review of Last
"Buffy" Poisoning Angel keeps Buffy distracted while the Mayor plans for his Ascension. The plan backfires when it turns out Angel's cure is the blood of a slayer -- and Buffy chooses Faith as the donor. Buffy and Faith face off for a heart-stopping fight to the death. Surprising herself and Faith, Buffy prevails and plunges Faith's own dagger deep into her rival. But even in death, a bloody Faith defeats Buffy -- by throwing herself onto a passing truck and taking Angel's cure with her. As the rest of the circle realizes the magnitude of what is to come, they enjoy what could be their final days. While the Mayor dines on plump spiders, Willow and Oz jump into the sack, Xander and his man-hating prom date get friendly and Giles burns the midnight oil looking for clues. The only thing they know for sure is the pure demon to come is going to be bigger, nastier and more evil than anything they've ever seen.
OOPS! As Angel and Buffy start to argue in the street, he's holding the box with two hands. The camera moves to Buffy, but you can still see Angel at the edge of the shot, and he doesn't move. When it cuts back to him, though, he's holding the box with only one hand. When Buffy tends to Angel in the library (after they realize he's been poisoned), the shots from the front of him show a lot of sweat on his face, but in the shots from the side, his face looks completely dry. It's possible, though, that this is due to the lighting. It sounds as though Willow says that she can run a trace analysis and "see if it's a mystical poisoned" (which would be grammatically nonsensical).
Your Thoughts Speak out! If Amy ever becomes human again, will she have memories from her time as a rat (like the time she witnessed Willow and Oz having sex)? Email me with your thoughts on this issue, the last episode, and anything else that's on your mind. This spot's for you!
I think its great the have repeats of buffy, because I love Faith on the show. She is a wonderful actress. I just saw True Lies last night and she was great in the movie. I admire her hard work and her talent is great. Maybe I'll meet Eliza Dushku someday. - TaraRose21@aol.com
I am pissed at the WB. I don't mean to sound harsh, but I just don't like to see stuff on the screwed up WB anymore, because they cancelled part two. They are frickin' idiots for canceling the episode. I am just upset so please don't take this email personally. Also, you do get the info faster then anyone else. Bye. - mmerlen@juno.com
Some of us aren't waiting until July to see Graduation: Part 2, because of a tapetree. Canada and Orlando got to see it on a new station, VR. What gets to me is that there is less violence in today's shows than when our parents were growing up. Also, the news exploits teen violence. I agreed about "Earshot" being pulled to air at a later date, but I didn't agree with "GD2" being yanked. I'm part of the WB and I also signed a petition. Next, I'm writing a letter to the CEO of WB. Thanks, and great newsletter! - CassieSu79@aol.com
First of all, great newsletter! It's good to get the inside story on Buffy over here in England. Just a few thoughts on the pulling of Graduation Day: Part 2. I totally agree with your comments about WB adding fuel to the fire by delaying this episode. Obviously, what happened in Colorado was a terrible tragedy, but shows like Buffy and artists like Marilyn Manson are not the causes of these things, merely available scapegoats. It's interesting watching this whole thing unfold from this side of the pond, because we've had similar knee-jerk reactions by the media over here over similar incidents in the past (i.e. the Child's Play 3 witch-hunt that followed the Jamie Bulger murder, and the backlash against violent action films like Rambo following the Hungerford Massacre in 1986). They do nothing to tackle the reasons behind why people are driven to commit these acts. The WB should recognise that what they've got in Buffy is an intelligent show that provides good strong role models for the youth of America and the rest of the world. They should be defending the integrity of the show by airing this episode, rather than effectively admitting that they are worried about the content of the show, and more importantly, the ability of the fans to differentiate between the reality of Colorado and the fact that Buffy is fiction. Life isn't always pleasant, but when there's a school shooting, all we can do is pay our respects and move on, hoping that sensible solutions can be found for the causes of these tragedies, rather than the 'quick-fix' that the media is so fond of. Keep up the good work. - richard.cosgrove@knoll.co.uk
Hey! I love the new colors for "Sunnydale News". I've got some information on Nick Brendon being in a new movie Pinata. Let me know. - SIayerGirl@aol.com
Thanks for making this newsletter so I get all the very best Buffy updates. - Weasel1919@aol.com
Hot News
EARSHOT COMES TO ITS SENSES....A near-fatal run in with a pair of oozy, mouthless demons unexpectedly leaves Buffy with the awsome ability to hear other people's thoughts, but this newfound power ultimately threatens to overwhelm and destroy her as the cacophony of thoughts isolates her from the rest of the world and drives her to the brink of insanity. Creator Joss Whedon was also informed by the WB that "Earshot" will air two weeks before the season premiere (likely in September).
BUFFY MUSIC VIDEO...The WB had a special music that had nearly every member of the WB in it. It was really awesome and I hope all of you had the chance to see it. (It aired right after Buffy on June 1st.) If not? The Buffy Network made a video clip of the whole music video exclusively available for download right here. It's three minutes long and you can enlarge it to full screen and it will still be really good quality. Click here to download the video in MPEG Format (8.6MB) or click here to download it in RealMedia Format (4.8MB).
ANGEL MOVES ON...The season finale will also pave the way for Angel's departure from the show. Details are leaking out about David Boreanaz's spin-off show, "Angel," which will air Tuesday nights after "Buffy" next season. Much of the action will take place at a low-rent detective agency in Los Angeles. Angel will get a chance to show his humorous side (!), and he'll pick up an undead sidekick, Glenn Quinn ("Roseanne"), who'll play his carefree spiritual mentor at the agency. Angel will also be joined by an economically challenged Cordelia, who heads to L.A. to pursue dreams of stardom. There are no plans at this time for the two to hook up romantically. "It's not like Angel is ever going to get over Buffy," creator Joss Whedon told EW, "but he won't be whining about her every episode. She'll just be the spectre of his one true love." Cordy's ongoing poverty will have a pronounced effect on her "both fashion-wise and reality-wise," says Carpenter. Whedon also holds out the possibility that characters may occasionally cross over between "Buffy" and "Angel."
HE'S PURE EVIL...Seth Green is enjoying his little slice of sequelitis. Green reprises his role as Scott Evil, Dr. Evil's nagging son, in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," which is going gangbusters at the box office. The shag-a-delic flick took in $54.7 million in its first week. Seth looked dapper at L.A. premiere, sporting a charcoal gray suit, blue tie and a beautiful (but unnamed) girl on his arm. He rubbed shoulders with Alicia Witt, Janeane Garofalo, Rebecca Gayheart, the members of Green Day and (of course) co-stars Mike Myers and Heather Graham before heading off to the screening. Not a bad reward for being pure Evil! Seth reports his main competition for babes on the "Austin Powers" set came from Verne Troyer, who plays Mini-Me, Dr. Evil's pint-size clone. ''I couldn't believe how the women were into him,'' Seth told EW. ''Here's this little bald guy, and the women were like, 'Swoon!' It was making me mad. I was like, 'What's up? I'm over here, I've got hair, and I'm at least a little taller.'''
Class of 1999: The Senior Class How do you separate the students from the superstars? You don't! When these celebs went to school they were just like everyone else: Some were cool, some were clowns and some were clueless. But why not let them tell you about it?
David
Boreanaz David was an angel at one of the Philadelphia area's most elite private schools, but he had a secret passion for blood --- well, maybe not, but he did play football. After being injure during his junior year, the acting bug took hold. "I was always around the theater in [New York City]," he heas said. "It grew on me as I grew older."
Nicholas
Brendon Nicholas told TEEN PEOPLE that he "redefined teen angst" in school, where he neer had a girlfriend, but did have acne, braces and a stutter. "I'd keep quiet to prevent mortification," he said. (His identical twin, Kelly, fared better.) His only refuge was playing baseball, and later, taking acting classes, which helped him control his speech impediment (and snag a great job).
Alyson
Hannigan "[High school] seemed very monotonous and long." Alyson told TEEN PEOPLE. "II completely felt like an outsider." Her passion, then as it is now, was acting, but she got few jobs, which might have been exacerbated by the fact that she dyed her hair black and wore mostly black. The look didn't work for her: "I'm like the whitest person alive," she has pointed out. - Teen People 1999 All-Star Yearbook, Summer 1999 Quote of the Week
