General Information
Information about Dr. Khoo's New Jersey location.

Our office is open from 9:00 am to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. We close one hour for lunch. You can call about your appointment or prescription renewal during these hours. We do not fill prescriptions after office hours or on weekends.

If this is your first visit to us please arrive early - give yourself plenty of time to find our office. Go to the New Patients page.
There is a free parking lot.

There are many detailed medical forms that need to be filled out and in our possession many days before your first consult. This data has to be entered into our computer medical record by the staff. You can download forms from our website. If you don't have Internet access, we can mail you the forms or fax them to you. You can even come to the office to pick up the forms. In order to keep our office running efficiently these forms need to be in our hands at least 2 business days ahead of your appointment or your appointment may be rescheduled. If you have medical information from your referring doctor (colonoscopy, surgery, pathology reports), you need to get these to us immediately.

We used to have patients bring their forms at the time of their office visit, but too much time was lost entering the data into the computer. In order to see patients without delay we now ask for the forms to be brought in or mailed back 5 days ahead of the appointment. If the forms are not received ahead of your appointment, you may be rescheduled.

To save time, please download all the forms from the New Patients page, read them and fill them out and bring them or mail them well before your visit.

Preparing for Your Visit
Sometimes we will want you to take one or two Fleet enemas before arriving for your consultation. These are done 2 hours before your appointment, each about 1/2 hour apart (if two are required). Many patients are reluctant to do this but it is necessary to clean out the rectum so a complete exam can be done. Even if you have already had a bowel movement, a lot of stool can remain in the rectum which would require another visit to complete your exam. Nobody wants that.

You do not need to starve - you can eat your breakfast or lunch before coming UNLESS the office staff tells you otherwise.

On Call After Hours
A doctor is on call 24 hours a day and can be reached for emergencies after regular office hours. If it is an emergency, please call (609) 978-3390 and an operator will page the doctor for you. If you just have questions and it is not an emergency, please call during regular office hours.
Sometimes Dr. Khoo is away but your call will be directed to an on-call doctor.

Your First Visit
The first visit will include an extensive history, an examination by the doctor, and a consultation. We value each patient and want to give you our attention for the full length of this visit. Therefore, we ask that you arrive on time and send back all our forms ahead of time, bring your insurance card, and a form of payment such as a major credit card.
You would be surprised to hear how many patients show up without their insurance or Medicare information, expecting our office to waste time calling their insurance company to confirm their insurance status. Sometimes this inconsideration by others causes your appointment to be delayed - this is what causes patients to be frustrated with wasted waiting at the doctor's office. Therefore if a patient shows up at our office without valid insurance information, his/her appointment will be rescheduled.

Our medical history form should be filled out as completely as possible. If you have had treatment from another physician or tests done related to the problem you are coming to see us for, it is very helpful to have a copy of your doctor's notes, test results, x-ray reports, and any GI work-up information. You may bring this information with you, have your doctor fax the information to us, or have your doctor mail it to the address above.

Your visit may include an examination of your abdomen and a rectal exam. When you book your appointment, you may be asked to do a Fleet enema prep of the anorectal area so that the doctor can examine the area well. Please call us if you are unsure about this aspect of your appointment at (609) 978-3390. Patients who are coming to discuss colorectal cancer screening procedures only with no immediate colorectal problems will not need an examination or need a prep for that appointment will just be a consultation.

Your appointment will include an informative visit with the doctor. After reviewing your history and findings during your physical exam (if one was done), the doctor will discuss an individualized treatment plan with you. If you wish, appropriate family members are welcome to attend with you for this part of the visit.

As you can see, the first visit is a lengthy one. If you are unable to keep your appointment, please notify us soon as possible. We take cancellations seriously.
Presently there is a several week waiting list of patients that need to be seen. A generous appointment time is made for each patient. If a patient does not show for the appointment, that time could have been used by someone who is waiting to be seen.

If you cancel or miss three appointments without a good reason, you will be referred to another colorectal surgeon.

Questions to ask your surgeon:
Are you board certified?
Only surgeons certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery are qualified to call themselves colon and rectal surgeons and treat complex colon and rectal problems.
Click to learn more about Board Certification

What is your clinical experience and the results of surgery? How many times have you performed this surgery?
The average U.S. general surgeon does only 8 colon resections a year and only 3 hemorrhoidectomies per year. Studies have shown that surgeons with a large experience have superior results. You have the right to ask about the surgeon's volume and clinical results.

What complications might occur if I decide to have surgery?

Do I need surgery? Should I get a second opinion?
Are there alternatives to surgery? Can medical treatment be done?

Do not sign any consent form UNLESS you understand it well. You can still call the office after your visit, to ask the surgeon questions.
