The AEM Inc. Cold Air System is the result of extensive testing and development on a wide variety of cars. Each system is engineered for the particular application. The AEM Inc. Cold Air System differs from all others in two major ways. First, they take the inlet air from outside of the engine compartment where the inlet air is considerably cooler than the hot underhood air. The cooler inlet air translates to more power during the combustion process because cool air is denser than warm air. AEM Inc. has conducted extensive inlet air temperature studies and have seen temperature reductions of up to 50 degrees by pulling air from outside of the engine compartment. Second, they use a true air inlet funnel at the end of the inlet pipe. The use of the Turbo-Flo inlet funnel greatly improves the aerodynamic efficiency of airflow into the induction pipe. They have seen air flow gains on a flow bench of 12-15% due to the use of this inlet funnel, demonstrating that by inducting more volume for a given temperature also translates to more air mass flow and hence more power.
The engineering considerations in the design of the AEM Inc. Cold Air System are; pipe length, pipe diameter and filter location. Proper sizing of the inlet pipe allows them to take advantage of the acoustical dynamics inside of the inlet pipe created by the sound waves produced by the inlet valve/port and cam overlap. The diameter of the pipe dictated the frequency at which the secondary wave is sent back down the pipe. The propagation of the secondary wave at certain RPM’s is what they strive to take advantage of because it helps to “ram” the inlet air into the port as it travels back down the pipe. They have tried many lengths and diameters of pipe and have determined the best all around performing specifications for each application. When a design is developed, AEM Inc. conducts dynamometer testing on several cars to validate the design. This time consuming process, expensive exercise is done to assure you the customer, a quality product and power gains you can count on, car after car.
You will notice that the pipe is very light. This is because it is made of aluminum. They chose aluminum as their material because of its corrosion resistance, durability in a high heat environment, and it is lightweight. The pipe is coated with a thermally non-conductive heat barrier for further performance enhancement and good looks. These features ensure that the AEM Inc. Cold Air System will deliver performance for many years.
