Who Can Beat Bill Goldberg?

Ok, since the start of this web page, all I've pretty much discussed is WWF related angles, wrestlers and events. Now that its a day before the King Of The Ring, I decide to do a brief WCW column. Go figure.

And yes kiddies, that's the Ultimate Warrior in the bottom right hand corner of that picture above. For those of you who don't know, the Warrior is expected to show up in WCW at any time now. More specifically, the July 6th Nitro. Could happen. Maybe not. It was also rumoured that the Warrior would show up to face Goldberg for his 100th match, which of course.... didn't happen. 8)

So now Goldberg is 102 - 0. I'd almost say that's impressive but truthfully, with the exception of Mongo, Raven and Konnan all he's fought is jobbers. But honestly, I can't help but mark for the guy sometimes. Youb have to admit that the guy's got charisma, intensity and a bag of some good high impact moves. But how big is that bag? I really don't know. Some say quite small. Some say he's holding back. I say he's got alot more moves than the Warrior had in his heyday but he needs the right opponent to execute them right. That's to say he can't pull off that "spike" shoulder tackle correctly on a large wrestler. There's no snap. Its not much more than the old Hacksaw tackle.

Though it seems he can put the Jackhammer on just about anybody. I was VERY impressed when he basically fought Hugh Morris and the Barbarian at the same time. He hoisted them both up, one after the other and Jackhammered them. Morris is not a small man. Though he held him up easily. AFTER he did the same thing to the Barbarian. The guy is STRONG. Even the Warrior couldn't do a Gorilla Press on everybody, no matter how many 'roids he was pumped up with.

So, who's gonna give Goldberg his first loss? It could be any one of the guys above. It could all come down who has the biggest ego. I think Sting and the Giant are professional enough to job to Goldberg in a decent match. It wouldn't have to be a squash, but a loss none the less. Bret might as well, but he's still trying to get some heat for his showdown with Hogan at the next Starrcade. As for the rest, I doubt they'd job. So, I'd bet it'll be one of the guys on the right hand side of "The Man".

On a side note..... As much as Goldberg has got going for him, WCW needs to do a couple things with him before he loses his steam.

  • Give Goldberg a feud. If his whole gimmic is based on how many jobbers the guy can beat, the crowd will get bored.
  • Have Goldberg fight longer matches. People are just expecting a 30 second match, and that's it. But that can't happen forever.
  • Let Goldberg speak. If he can speak that is. It's cool that he's some kinda unstoppable monster, but he's not a freak. He's an ex-football player. Who happens to have the biggest trap muscles I've ever seen. Austin is an explosive wrestler. The Rock is a good wrestler. But they got over so well with ample interview time.
  • Give Goldberg more credible opponents.
  • WCW has a MAJOR star in the making in Goldberg. If they don't market him right, he's gonna fizzle out just like Sting did after he adopted the "Crow" gimmic. Sting was supposedly "unstoppable". He was supposed to beat Hogan clean at Starrcade. But Hogan wouldn't let Sting have his moment by making it a "controversial" ending. If anyone screws up Goldberg's career down the line it may be Hogan, and Bischoff just can't let that happen with a money machine like Goldberg.

That's it, but expect News & Views #7 to hit webspace soon after King Of The Ring '98!
