Control Components

GReddy/TRUST-designed turbochargers are the heart of our renown systems. Now, meet the "brains."

At GReddy, it's not enough to "manage" the myriad functions of today's advanced engines. We know you want total control. That's why we are the undisputed leaders in marrying the best in electronics and computer science to automotive applications

The focus of our research and development– Hondas, Integras, Mazdas, Toyotas, Lexuses, Nissans and Mitsubishis–are among the world's finest automobiles. Emission levels, reliability, smoothness and fuel economy are optimized, according to the factory's definitions, by onboard control systems.

Our engineers build on the stock components and extend capabilities in truly innovative ways. Here's a rundown of how the Turbo Timer, Rebic III Simulator, PRofec and new PRofec B fit into your performance upgrade plan, logically and affordably.

Turbo Timer

Turbo Timer

If you have a turbocharger-whether it's factory, added or upgraded–the Turbo Timer should be included in your budget under the category: "peace of mind." The Turbo Timer allows you to leave your vehicle while the timer leaves your engine running anywhere from 10 seconds to 9.99 minutes. The gradual cool-down prevents bearing damage that can occur when a turbocharged engine is shutdown abruptly after normal driving. ("Spirited" driving and its more extreme temperatures would be even worse.)

The turbo's bearings rely on a generous supply of clean engine oil. All oil pressure is lost when the engine isn't running. With temperatures of about 250F/106C-and at the turbine shaft, 300-350C (540-630F)–a hard, destructive varnish or "coke" can form on the bearings or seals. With the one-quarter DIN-sized GReddy Turbo Timer tucked in an unobtrusive location, you can leave and lock your car with confidence. No "baby-sitting" your prized machine or being late to work or a movie.

Rebic

Rebic III

When a turbocharger and intercooler deliver more air to the engine, more fuel is needed to extract the potential power-especially in street/strip/race applications. The Rebic III is an auxiliary fuel-injector controller that works independent of the factory electronic control unit. GReddy's "black box" can be used in any forced-induction setup to supply more fuel under high boost. The Rebic III maintains safe air/fuel ratios, while supplying up to eight additional injectors. Its modular designs lets you use the Rebic III with other GReddy control devices. We've found, to our delight, that enthusiasts rave about the Rebic III's graphical, dynamic user-interface and how it adds a "cool" factor to even the best interiors. Who says engineering has to be boring?

Rebic Simulator

Simulator

The Simulator is designed for the serious enthusiast who wants more control over the secondary fuel map. Features include:

PRofec

PRofec

The PRofec is the ultimate proactive, aggressive boost control for turbochargers and available at a reasonable price only from GReddy's authorized dealers.

The PRofec is an electronic boost controller that employs fuzzy logic. Its powerful CPU allows your engine to be at the razor edge of performance more often, safely. In its learn mode, our hardware and software process data from the vehicle and, using this more intelligent, interactive "mapping," the PRofec's stepping motor not only controls, but anticipates boost spikes.

Unlike most computers that only operate in "black and white" (1's and 0's), fuzzy logic can "think" in shades of gray and "learn" direct answers to problems. Where normal computers stair-step in "yes" and "no's," fuzzy logic can go straight to the answer.

In recent years, fuzzy logic has gained popularity on everything from the famous bullet trains in Japan to washing machines and thermostats. The latter is a great example when we look at fuzzy logic's application in the PRofec. Standard on/off thermostats will turn on the heating or air conditioning when the air reaches the set temperature. Fuzzy logic thermostats turn on the A/C or heat a little as the temperature approaches the specified value.

When it comes to boost control, standard electronic controls will open the wastegate at a specified boost pressure. In some cases, the desired boost can be reached too fast for the controller to act, and harmful overboost can occur. Fuzzy logic, on the other hand, actually learns how fast your engine approaches maximum safe boost and starts to open the wastegate at the appropriate time so you never get into an overboost condition. Fine-tuning your vehicle to the highest safe boost setting eliminates the need for a wide safety margin to compensate for potential overboost.

GReddy has taken all the features of fuzzy logic and packaged them in an elegant, compact unit: the PRofec. It's outfitted with a high-speed processor, a warning alarm, LED display and an overtake boost system as developed on turbocharged Formula 1 cars. Naturally, we include a link that will allow the PRofec's use with future GReddy electronic control technology.

Overtake boost will let you run a specified higher boost pressure for better economy. When you need to accelerate for passing, the PRofec allows maximum boost for a period you control, then returns to the lower boost level automatically. This provides the best engine and turbo life without sacrificing on-demand performance.

PRofec B

PRofec B

The PRofec B is our answer to a number of tuners and enthusiasts who wanted a GReddy boost controller that was less expensive–and demanding–than the PRofec. The fuzzy-logic PRofec is still the ultimate controller but its programming requires patience–and consistent engine parameters. The engine can't have occasional leaks or suffer "boost creep." The PRofec B is a great choice for street cars and those equipped with sequential turbochargers. It's not recommended for large-displacement engines with small turbos or quick-response turbos.

Finally, we designed the PRofec B to be affordable because we know our customers love quality and value. The suggested list price is $420.00.

Wastegates

Power without control isn't performance. It's dangerous.

The wastegate is a critical component of GReddy's total power system. Our precision, premium-crafted wastegates help ensure maximum power, flexibility, responsiveness and safety.

Wastegates

Modern turbocharging systems work. Thousands of cars, trucks and race cars attest to that. The turbocharger's proven performance and durability have made it the choice of companies as diverse as Nissan, Mazda, Buick, Porsche, Toyota, Saab, Volvo and others.

A turbocharging system, however, is only as good as its components. This is especially important when fitting a turbocharger to a normally aspirated, late-model engine. The modern power-train is a marvel of mechanical, computer and electrical engineering. Power-per-displacement, smoothness and sophistication, reliability, emissions sensitivity–even fuel economy–are designed in and aggressively managed. The payoff: a superb driving experience and ample power

When selecting a turbocharging system, the last thing the enthusiast wants is to take a step backward by using "any" piece!

The wastegate is commonly a spring-loaded valve fitted just before the turbine. The valve opens and bleeds off excess exhaust pressure when the compressor reaches a predetermined boost. The wastegate performs three jobs:

But consider the "working environment," and you'll understand why wastegate technology and quality are an investment.

Heat. A wastegate must withstand brutal heat. A highly modified engine can generate over 900C/1652F-on the street! At that extreme, standard metals can melt. GReddy Performance Products wastegates are made of high quality stainless steel and ductile cast iron that can withstand temperatures exceeding 950C/1742F.

Boost control. As good as stock wastegates are, our engineers have found that some aren't precise enough or properly sized. A wastegate that permits boost to fluctuate between 12 and 16 psi when the target is exactly 14 psi simply isn't delivering maximum power and engine protection all the time. We've seen some of these "leakers" dump too soon and the pressure drops drastically. The turbo has to play "catch up."

GReddy's CNC-machined wastegates never "waste" exhaust-gas energy. Our Type S wastegates are designed for street/performance applications. They're ideal for smaller engines (1.6 to 2.0 liters) and smaller turbocharger applications.

The Type R is for larger-capacity turbos and engines in the 300 HP-plus range.

The Type C is ideal for "highly motivated" vehicles of between 400 and 1000 HP.
