New starter motor at £394 plus 3 1/2 hrs labour makes a total of £520! - Robert Pownall

Problems  -  Only problem has been the water pump.  The new pump cost £45 and I was

charged £70 fitting, the engine had to be lifted up to get to the pump! - Simon Michael

I've had a few problems with my GTiR,first the CV boots £115 then a couple of months later the clutch was playing up,the pedal was really loose and sticking and the car wouldn't go in gear, the garage found the problem,it was a leaking Clutch Master Cylinder -about 210 pounds to repair. - Caleb Zunino

But one of the most common expensive problems must be the standard clutch especially to anyone interested in modifying their cars, I an such a victim of the weak clutch. As I've raised the boost to 1 bar my clutch has decided to slip drastically and has caused me to source an uprated item,I've gone for an AP Racing clutch with a standard clutch cover, this is meant to feel just like the standard item but will take power in excess of 300 bhp without much bother. The biggest problem though is the £450 bill to fit the dawn thing! - Caleb Zunino

Try adding another 0 to your clutch bill and thats about 8 tenths of what its

cost me for my rebuild of the engine !! I've attached a picture of my broken

piston. - Nik Hill

My friend took his GTi-R to Castle combe today and within 3 laps he heard a terrible noise and lost his power steering and his ABS light came on the engine sounded horrible. We think his big ends have gone, but its tricky to determine the problem without taking it apart. - Nik Hill

Below are some of Callan John's problems with his car, to read a detailed account of his problems and views ( a good read ) then click here

I saw an advert for a uk car in motoring news. had an inspection done and got a glowing report. Duly flew to glasgow 27/11/98 did the deal and drove back £9250 lighter.

Ovre the next week it became obvious that my car was BHP light when I struggled to overtake XR3s. Also the car revved a bit lumpily.

At Moseley's tuning in Llandeilo the boost pressure was diagnosed at 7 psi (pussys boost).Got a bleed valve put on temporarily to put boost to std 10.6 psi then went to Interpro. 209 bhp at 5858 and high fuel pressure. Now Ive just had a new std boost control and fuel pressure reg. fitted.

As the car has obviously still got less than standard boost with the replacement boost control fitted and the bleed valve removed. The engine seems to use to much fuel, is reluctant to rev without lumpiness and is just not very powerful. I'm hoping Interpro will be able to diagnose the problem or I'll have the only GTIR in Britain with impotence.!Turbos fine. Ive a printout from the car march 98 at TDI rolling road with 225 bhp at 6850 revs so it has worked ok.

My starter motor also died at the start of April. Because you apparently need to remove the inlet manifold to remove and refit the starter, complete with new sealing gasket 2 weeks wait, the labour was 11 hours and that's with the mechanic being good! Vince only charged me for 8 hours labour-just over £300 parts and labour (exchange starter). - Callan John
