Just News To You

High Definition - the Future?

New Products?

My Third news letter is just that; the Third News Letter. I hate to say it, but I didn't receive a lot of comments on my first or second one. And believe me, there was room for comments! I can tell you that we are doing fairly well as a site, considering we have only been on line since the 18th of March. (So if you see the counter on the front, remember that it's only been a short while since we started!). Check out our new Video Terms section, which provides answers to those questions of what does JPEG or MPEG mean. Take some time to check us ALL out, and , if you want, provide any comments or insight you might have. All we can do is get better!

Please note that some of the pages may take a little longer to load. I have changed some of the HTML code and Java Script to make the pages a little more attractive and fun to use. Please be patient during loading, as the end results is better than before.

All I have heard about is the High Definition products. The unfortunate part is that I have been unable to see any of these products until recently. I finally saw one of the manufacturers Hi Def cam/corder unit. It appears that this may be the way of the future.I know at least one of  The Hollywood/Burbank rental houses has a few of the Sony HDW700 units. I have also heard that Laser Pacific is ready to cut any production shot with this format. Also, in Seattle American Film and Video has as least one camcorder, and by the time you read this, will also have an edit suite. The advent of the Advanced Television signal is upon us it appears. To compliment this, I have also heard that some of the Japanese consumer companies have begun delivery or manufacture of their consumer High Def televisions. I guess it's time to get on the band wagon.

Some new products I have seen recently are the HDW700 High Definition Camera Recorder from Sony, along with their new HDC750 hand held camera. (I have been visiting the rental houses, and it seems that many already have these products.) This also includes the newer High Def monitors from Sony, Panasonic and other manufacturers. Many manufacturers have made a 20 inch version to fit in the racks along the other broadcast monitors. There have also been some additions to the professional line of products for some manufacturers with dedicated Wide Screen versions of their cameras. I believe the future will be divided between 16X9 and High Definition origination of productions.

Or, if you would like to become an individual or corporate sponsor, write me and tell me. We can create extra advertising space here for you, or simply link to your page. I hope this site can grow and become a great support to all types of Broadcast and Professional camera owners and operators.

As this is the Third issue, I had hoped for some actual comments from the readers.... I can't say I've had that many comments yet. I believe it's only been one or two so far. Don't feel shy, please write me with any feelings, comments, suggestions or what ever you have. There is room here for many, many more pages. I am open to suggestions as to what the other pages might have on them. Maybe Job Openings, custom camera set ups, user information and so on. So, don't hesitate to write! I promise I will read all the mail and respond as soon as I possibly can. Thanks for reading!

News/Production Formats

Sony is promoting their SX Digital Betacam format and the DV-Cam format, Panasonic is pushing it's DVC-Pro format and JVC is selling it's Digital S format.  Is this a "format war?" Both Panasonic and Sony have brough out newer version of the DV-Cam and DVC-Pro formats.  Both look very nice in their demonstrations, but I am reserving my opinion for the moment.  I can't tell how sturdy these units will be for the long run, and for News work. And what about Production formats?  Is the 1/2 inch digital Hi Def format the choice for the future or can one use 16:9 Digital  Betacam?  One of the hints I have heard is that some of the networks are requesting Hi Def production now.  And, if you produce in Hi Def now, it can be converted to standard 525 or 525 16:9 very easily. Only time will tell which is the way of the future....  I will respect anyone else's opinion, and I will print it in these pages as part of the comments section if you would like.

Looks

If you have any specialized "looks" or setups for your Broadcast or Professional  camera you would like to share with everyone, please mail them to me. I would like to open up a section of special looks for various cameras. So send me the special setup you use and we will make it available to all that read our pages!
