Key for reading the story:

Max Jones is Caped Crusader's real name.

When you see a "~" this means some sort of telepathy (mind reading) or telekinetic (moveing objects with one's mind) action is taking place.

Generation Pre

Version 1.0

Max Jones is leaving work for the day. It's Friday afternoon and he is one of the
last ones to leave. He works at Bit-Byte, one of the newest computer corporations.
Though he is only nineteen, his exceptional knowledge about computers got him a job at
the Winston-Salem branch. Sitting at his computer in his cubical he clicks "Send" to
e-mail the document to his apartment; to be finished later. He turns off his computer and
looks at his watch. Five thirty. He takes his sport coat off of his chair and puts it on.
The jacket is an amber color reflecting the autumn colors. Because he works at a large
corporation he has to wear a suit and tie for work. He walks out towards the door as he
co-worker approaches, leaving too. "Hey, Max. You heading home too?", he asks.
"No. I've got a date. I'll go home and change but I won't be staying.", Max
explains.
"Hmm. Sounds about like me. I feel like I'm never home between here and tech.
school.", his friend says. "Well, I'll see you Monday."
"See ya.", Max says as they walk out. He walks to his red sports car and he gets
in. He puts his seat belt on and cranks it up. With a smile Max drives off. He drives
through town and into the residential area his cellular phone rings about the time he
reaches a stoplight. He reaches into his inside coat pocket and pulls it out. With a "beep"
he turns it on. "Hello?", he answers. "Oh, hey Michelle. I was just heading home to
change.", he says with recognition. On the opposite end of the line is his girlfriend.
"No, don't. I have a better idea. I'll dress up.", she says.
"Well, we could. Where would we go all dressed up?", he asks.
"We could go dancing.", she hints.
"Dancing? You know I'm not much of a dancer.", he argues.
"So what. You haven't taken me dancing in a while.", she defends.
"Alright you win.", he says, "See you in a few minutes. Bye." He presses a button
on the phone and hangs up with a laugh. At the intersection he turns right and drives off
to her house. He pulls up to her apartment and gets out. He makes his way to her door as
she comes out. He is pleasantly surprised by how well she looks. Her short blonde hair
is fixed nicely. Though it only comes to her chin it's been curled and permed. She is
wearing a strand of pearls around her neck, a gift from Max, and dangling earrings. She
has on a black sleeveless dress that shows off her slim figure and carries a matching
purse. "Wow!", he says as she walks up.
"Thanks.", she says taking his reaction as a compliment. She walks up to his car
as he opens the door for her. She gives him a ditzy laugh as she gets in. He laughs and
shakes his head as he walks around the car. He gets in the driver's side and drives off.
"Why do I get the feeling this isn't a spur of the moment thing?", he asks with a
smile.
"I wouldn't know.", she says. "Oh, by the way. We're going to Starburst club.",
she says.
"Yeah, you told me on the phone.", Max reminds her.
She pauses for a moment then says, "No I didn't."
	"You didn't?", he asks.
"No, I wouldn't have told you now, except, well... your driving... How did you
know?", she says.
	"Uh... lucky guess?", he says.
"Ha! You lie! You didn't know where I wanted to go.", she says as she slaps him
on the arm. They drive up to the club and park. "Looks like a crowd tonight.", she says
as she notices all the cars in the parking lot.
"Hmm. Maybe we should go elsewhere...", Max says picking.
"You wish!", she says. She takes him by the arm and they walk in. As they enter
they see it is quite full. Despite the inviting appearance of the outside there are lots of
unpleasant looking people inside. Many of the men are barbaric, brut looking guys and
their girls not nearly as feminine as Michelle. It looks as though the establishment had
been taken over by bikers.
"I thought Halloween was still a week or so away.", Max mutters. Michelle gives
him an inconspicuous jab to the side. They walk over to a table and sit down. A waitress
approaches them. Max and Michelle read the menus laying on the table. The waitress
stands waiting impatiently.
"Well? What'll you have?", she asks with her hand on her hip.
Feeling pressured Michelle says, "Well, I guess I'll have a salad." The waitress
scribbles something down on her pad and she looks to Max.
"Uh, I'll have the same.", he says. The waitress makes another mark on her
writing pad and she leaves. "Well!", Max says.
"Maybe this wasn't such a great idea.", Michelle says as she looks for the dance
floor. She's confident when she sees there isn't one.
Then a half drunk guy speaks to Michelle from the bar. "My, you're a looker
aren't you?" Michelle smiles.
The guy's friend sitting beside of him turns and looks at her. Then replies, "Ha!
I've seen better girls in alleys." Max rises to his feet insulted.
"Max!", Michelle says trying to calm him down.
This also insults the drunk guy. He says, "She ain't no worse than anything you've
drug in here." Max sits back down laughing.
"Oh yeah?", the guys says. He pushes the drunk off his stool and into the floor.
The entire club freezes. Then the drunk gets back to his feet and punches his friend.
Then the everyone jumps in on the bar fight. Max jumps up and grabs Michelle trying to
get out. They are making their way to the door when Michelle sees a bottle hurdling
towards them.
"MAX!", he sees the bottle just as she turns her head away from it. She hears the
glass shatter and she turns around to see the pieces of glass on the floor at their feet.
"What?", she says bewildered.
"Come on. Let's get out of here.", Max says as they escape. He drives her home
and at her doorstep he says, "Well, we'll try it again tomorrow night." She smiles in
agreement. He kisses her cheek and leaves. Back home, in Kernersville, he showers,
watches some television and goes to bed. Suddenly he is awoken. He is standing in an
intersection in town.
It's night. There's a crescent moon hovering above. There is oddly no traffic,
anywhere. All the traffic lights are red. Dense fog covers the ground and rises only waist
high. There isn't a sound to be heard anywhere within Max's perception. He looks
around as if searching for someone while he walks to the sidewalk out of the street. Then
from atop the Pinnix Drug building, a man leaps down in front of Max. The man is
wearing all red except for a yellow cape and a black eyemask. He lightly hits lands on
his feet and spins around to face Max. He cape swings around and flies around in
breezeless atmosphere. "There you are. You've got to have a dramatic entrance don't
you?", Max says. The caped mystery man says nothing and his critical expression doesn't
waiver. "What am I doing here tonight?", Max asks. No reply is given. Seemingly tired
he looks up to the sky and notices that the there aren't many stars out. Then they fade
away. All but two. Then Max notices the moon has vanished as well. He looks to his
silent partner when he sees he is gone. "What's going on? This never happened before!"
Suddenly the fog starts to rise and engulfs Max. It doesn't stop there. It engulfs
the entire city. He runs but the buildings run from him and he can not catch them nor
anything else.  He stops exhausted standing in solitude.  His vision is impaired by the fog;
but there is nothing to see. Then in a excruciating spasm of pain he falls to his knees.
"Ahhhh!", he grabs his head as a vision enters his mind.
He sees a shirt. A shirt laying floating in pond of stagnate water. The water
almost glows with purity. The shirt has a design on it. He strains to clarify the image.
Then as it fades he catches a glimpse of Garfield. As the figure fades the writhing pain
all throughout Max's body leaves. Then he wakes up, back in his bed, realizing it was
another dream.
The following night, Saturday night, Max gets ready for another date. With the
after images of his dream still echoing through his head he is at a loss to explain them.
Dreams are dreams; they can haunt him all they want but they can’t stop him from being
with this girl tonight. Once he is ready he gets in his car and pulls out of his house
towards Michelle’s house. While going down the road he hits memory dial on his cell
phone. “Hey, I’ll be there in a bit. You ready?”, he asks
	“All but ready.”, she says.
“See you soon.”, he says as he hangs up. As he drives along he approaches the
intersection of town that he dreamed of. He gets a bad feeling from this area. His pulse
begins to race. His muscles tense. Suddenly he hears the sound of a shot being fired. He
floors it and shoots through the intersection at full speed.
When he arrives at Michelle’s house he walks up to her door as she comes out.
She immediately sees how nervous and unstrung he is. “Is this your first date or
something?”, she asks.
	Max laughs, “No.”
“You sure look uneasy. You okay?”
“Yeah, I am now.”, he says as he escorts her to the car. They drive off. As they
are heading back into town he notices that his car is running low on gas. “Well, I better
get some gas if we’re going far.” He drives a mile or two when he sees a gas station
ahead.
Something about it gives him a funny feeling. He slows down preparing to stop
when Michelle sees a gas station across the street that is a few cents cheaper. “Hey, over
there...”
	“Ah!”, Max jumps.
“Max, honey, what’s gotten into you this evening?”, she asks sincerely concerned.
He takes a deep breath and says, “I’ve just got things on my mind.” He pulls into
the gas station determined not to let the gut feelings dictate his life. He pulls up to a
pump. Turning to Michelle he says, “I’ll only be a minute.”
He starts out when she says, “Hey leave the keys in here so I can listen to the
radio.” He hands her the keys and gets out. While pumping gas he notices a man in gray
standing next to a pay phone in front of the service station. Max nods to the guy looking
at him who cautiously returns to nod. When Max has finished pumping gas he goes in to
pay. He smiles to the woman behind the register and says, “Hi, ten dollars for gas.”, as
he hands her the money.
She smiles back and asks, “Will that be all?” Just then as if pricked by a voodoo
doll an intense spasm of fear pierces into him. ~MAX!!~ This thought enters his mind
so strongly he can’t help but yell. The sudden change from friendliness to utter terror
frightens the cashier. She steps back and screams attracting attention from other people
in the store.
Max spins around to see the man in gray trying to force his way in the car.
“MICHELLE!!!”, he yells. Max kicks open the service station door and runs towards the
car. Michelle inside trying to hold the door while the man tries to open it. Impatient the
guy pulls out small hand gun and fires it just as Max tackles him to the ground. Max
propels his fist into the guys stomach with all the force he can exert. Then trembling
with anger he begins to feel his mental powers fully manifesting. The guy begins to head
instead his stomach and begins to scream with excruciating pain. Max holds the mental
attack as long as he can until finally he loses concentration. The guys lays on the ground
barely alive as Max turns back to the car. Yet another spasm of fear shudders up and
down his spine as he sees a bullet hole in the window. He runs to the passenger side and
throws open the door as the police approach. Nothing could have prepared him for what
he saw.
Months later he still could not get over the incident. People began to see less and
less of him. He stayed at home almost all the time. When he did come out it was usually
at night. Finally Max Jones disappeared. Never to be seen again; by normal people.
