I have read tons and tons of literature regarding Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome. I have found and read only a few so far that have been any help whatsoever. I highly recommend these books to anyone who has been diagnosed or thinks it is possible they might have one or both of these chronic illnesses. I have also found ways to mentally alleviate pain through mental soul and spiritual guidance to help me get through the really hard days. You can order these books at a substantial discount through Amazon.com from the links on this page and Amazon will deliver them right to your mailbox (which helps when you can't get to the bookstore).
FROM FATIGUED TO FANTASTIC! by Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D. This book is a must for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue patients to take to their doctors. It is written by a doctor who has suffered with CFS himself. Make your doctor read this book if he/she has not already and insist on running the tests prescribed by Dr. Teitelbaum. Some of these tests you may have had before, however, many doctors do not understand the results and how they affect a patient with FMS/CFIDS. This book has helped me personnally understand my own symptoms, how to interpret them, and how to deal with them in both a medical and psychological way. If you read no other book on FMS/CFIDS, I urge you to read this one. FIBROMYALGIA & MYOFASCIAL PAIN SYNDROME/A SURVIVAL MANUAL by Devin Starlanyl, M.D. and Mary Ellen Copeland, M.S., M.A. This book is written more on the psychological side of the illnesses. Both authors have battled with FMS/CFS/CFIDS/MPS as well. It is an uplifing book. It includes the basic medical information for these illnesses in a well written format for we fibromites who are not doctors, however, it also talks in depth about how to deal with this disease mentally in your own personnal lifestyles. RUNNING ON EMPTY/A COMPLETE GUIDE TO CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME(CFIDS) by Katrina Berne, PH.D. This book deals basically with CFS/CFIDS only. It is also written by a woman who has had this illness and knows the ropes. This is also a great book for a spouse or a loved one who is a caregiver to a CFS/CFIDS patient. It is written compassionately, but with great medical authority. FIBROMYALGIA: A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH by Miryam Ehrlich Williamson. This book should be read by every adult who has a relationship with a FMS patient as well as the patient him/herself. This is the first book that I have read that deals with both men and women equally as well as children with FMS symptoms. This book especially deals with how to communicate with those who affect you, the patient, and those around you. It also talks about how to hold on to closeness and intimacy with your spouse or partner and how to keep your relationship together. It has a lot of information on medical, support, nutritional and other publication information. It is well written, easy to read and written from the heart. EAT RIGHT 4 YOUR TYPE the Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo with Catherine Whitney. This book is written on the premise that people should eat according to their individual blood types. It is an interesting history lesson as to how the human blood types evolved throughout the world and why some foods are healthy for some people and unhealthy for other. I have started weeding out a lot of the foods, spices, etc., that are incompatible with my O type. I have had much less digestive problems and am actually natually losing weight slowly but healthily. If you cannot find a diet that works well for you, this might be a good answer or at least a great place to start. It also suggests what vitamins and supplements that are good for each blood types and may explain why some supplements, herbs or vitamins may not work for you while they work for someone else. I will not say it is a "cure-all" for FMS or CFS/CFIDS but I am more knowledgeable regarding the reasons my body reacts to some substances I put into my body. It was recommended to my by my rheumotologist because I needed help managing my digestive problems and yeast infections. I am happy to say that my yeast infections have basically disappeared. PRESCRIPTION FOR NUTRITIONAL HEALING (2ND EDITION) by James F. Balch and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C If you are skeptical of prescription meds and narcotics or prefer a more natural approach to try first for just about any ailment, illness, syndrome, disease, etc., this is a great book to have in your library. It is organized with great care for easy reading, explains illness in detail; herbs, minerals, vitamins and other types of alternative treatments in much detail; and a listing of health and medical organizations and medical manufacturer and distributor information and a great glossary. And, of course I wouldn't recommend it unless it had a great and informative section on Fibro, CFS, CFIDS, MPS, Lupus and other auto-immune diseases. Its also great for the everyday needs of treating minor illnesses and "ooowwwwies" as kids call them at home without a panic. It is a "Practical A-Z Reference To Drug-Free Remedies Using Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs, & Food Supplements." I recommend that all fibromites and chronic fatigued read all of these books. I also recommend that spouses, close friends, or any loved ones of someone with these illnesses read these books. I promise that it will give new insight to what a FMS/CFS/CFIDS patient is dealing with day to day. FIBROMYALGIA & CHRONIC MYOFASCIAL PAIN SYNDROME and RUNNING ON EMPTY and FIBROMYALGIA: A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH also help in dealing with a child with these disorders. Happy Reading!
